What is this part??

What is this part (number 16) in the diagram of the crankshaft from a 1996 SJ? Is this part needed to install the engine side coupler?

It says its a seal, and when I search by the part number a rubber looking seal comes up? Will I need this before installing the engine side coupler on my TPE?

It's an oring, it's usually stuck to the coupler I believe. Are you running oem couplers or aftermarket?

Look at the backside of the coupler and you should see it there.... If I remember correctly.

I am getting a used OEM coupler, I sold mine with my last engine, so just wondering if I will need this as well.

It is a rubber ring with a square profile. It is not needed, it is designed to keep water from engine side coupler threads. Not all couplers had them. Put anti-seize on the threads and it will be fine.
