What is your ultimate shop cart?

I was thinking about building a shop stand and im wondering what you guys think would be the perfect shop stand. Hee are a few examples of things i have thought of... (not every idea could be used on the same cart)

• A stand made from a harbor freight motorcycle jack, so it can be raised and lowered for best working height depending on the job
• Larger tires like mower tires, so the cart can be rolled through the grass to store a ski in a shed, but much narrower than a beach cart
• Storage under the stand. Most shop stands are made of tubing and have open space below, but what about a stand with parts storage and tubes etc for nuts and bolts organization

Other ideas? How would you make the basic shop stand more versatile?

I'm a fan of the basic aluminum sissier stand and a $8 harbor freight dolly with casters. Its alittle low to the floor but very practical, multipurpose, and cheap.

If budget was no option I'd have Exhibit pimp my shop stand with $200 in large wide pneumatic locking casters with air ride suspension, a sound system, 14 TV's, and probably a built in fish tank

This^^ Perfect height for loading on and off the trailer and I store 3 gas jugs under it.

I'm surprised ac doesn't sell a shop cart kit that just attaches in that way.

I have a roller cart and a beach cart that are the same height. I have thought about adding a shelf to the roller but the way it is now, it would greatly limit what I can place under it. It's the perfect height now to slide the big rubbermaid totes under. The space under both my skis is always packed.

There's a gearbox lifting jig here at work that I want to steal some ideas from. It has a wide stable base with castors and the fixture table is attached to a 3 point pivot with a wormgear for raising and lowering it. You could lower it down for storage or wrenching and then raise it up to truck height for loading. The worm gear could very easily be driven with a cordless drill to make it that much slicker.

The snowmobile lifts have really come down in price and would be a good base to start with. You need to replace the small castors with something that rolls better with some weight on them bit otherwise, they are pretty useable right out of the box. Just add bunks.

I like the Harbor freight Manual lift tables as well. They are pretty narrow so my concern would be tipping it over with it in the raised position.

I guess I should claify that my interest on the topic is driven by project skis. Using beach stands and cart are great solutions for repairing a running ski. However a custom project second ski isn't worth tying up a $150 beach stand or $600 beach cart.

Only thing I'm thinking of right now is making a standard stand that uses 6"-10" wheels so I can move a project off the carport to the shed and back.

I was thinking more like a steel cart with 10" tractor tires and 6" swivel castors. The cart would be about 6' long and the width of a Superjet bond rail. Ground clearance would be probably about 4" which would be enough to stick your foot under so you can bend less to work on the ski. The frame would be a box shape, and it would have shelves to hold about 3 of the containers for sorting out boots an other hardware based on where it was removed from the ski. The remaining section of the cart would be open with a door on it to hold various components you have removed.

I'm not sure it would be perfect when all said and done, but it's an idea that would make a project / custom ski build self contained and easily moved out of the shop when you want to make minor repairs to your primary ski.

Some 2x4, 4 casters, and a piece of plywood for storage underneath does it for me. I have 2 roll around carts built this way. Been kicking around idea of making one out of steel with adjustable middle section.

What you describe with the wood is what I have now with 3 inch casters. One is 6 inches off the ground and the other is about 30 inches off the ground.

Here's one I made from 2x6s. Perfect height (27") for transferring to my hitch hauler and for working on the ski. I put 4" casters on mine because my garage floor has a lot of cracks...
