What Makes a Ski Try to Return to Upright out of a Turn?

The reason I ask, is because the FX1 does not want to turn back upright on its own out of a turn.

It's ok, I am getting used to it. And I am not going to modify the hull - yet.

I just want to understand hull dynamics.

It seems to me that to want to return to upright on its own, a hull must have some sort of "lift" on the sides so that the water current wants to right it.

What do tubbies/sponsons on the front do?

What do those add-on rails on the back of the hull do?

Tubby description can be kinda tough, but will give it a shot, In your case, It widens the hull footprint. from a turning standpoint, as you lean the hull over, without the nose will kinda want to dive down from the effects of the nozzle, with the tubbies, it will let the nose of the ski rise up, allowing you to power through the turns better. Same effect works surf riding, keeps the nose from burying. This was explained to me by Mark Matsuda back in 2004 when I was trying to decide to stick with racing my SJ or switch to the SXR.

I think the best thought on the FX1 not wanted to turn back up easily or naturally is because it is a smaller hull with less water surface, do not know your size, but if you were larger 200+ lbs, I could see this being part of it, heck, even 180 maybe. But I have never noticed this, I have never been a huge fan except when I only had a 550 and a buddy bought one, it was the best thing next to sliced bread....... Best way to describe what to do, would be to slam into turns so that the deflection will cause the hull to stand back up right. Others with more experience with the FX may can give better insight.... Just keep riding and figure out the quirks............

Yes, I have only ridden it three days and I am friggin' loving it over the barge of a 94 SJ SN.

(Which is weird since the wider X2 Gen 1 hull is my favorite hull.)

I started trying pushing down on the bow and rolling it onto the seam line - not subbing it - just to make a sharper turn.

It is not as nimble as our 550sx (185 psi slightly modded engine) but I already know that it is a better package for fun...

@Big Kahuna you built a Rickter Edge a year or two ago didn't you?

Do you have ride review and a link to it?

(I went to your profile but this forum doesn't seem to list all of the threads that a member has started.)

Less than a year ago!!!!!!! http://www.x-h2o.com/index.php?threads/rickter-edge-build-not-another-freak-build.192087/

Dont think I did a ride review thread......... It rides like a smaller SJ. Very Nimble, Awesome in the surf. very predictable. Still playing with Flat water setup, went a month with the rear sponsons off......... just put them back on. They are better for longer distance riding, but could easily ride it without them..........
