What pump would you choose?

If you were building a hull from scratch. Not using an exsisting hull and retrofitting something but making a plug to pull a mold. What pump would you choose and why.

Criteria is this
1 - freeride/surf hull also used for flatwater but not concerned with racing/speed. Just low end hit is top priority.

2 - Most if not all will say such-n-such pump so you can put a XXXmm magnum pump in it. I would like that opinion but I would also like a stock pump opinion so maybe it doesnt need to be a magnum pump must situation. For wallet sake.

3 - In terms of construction I know that a yami setup needs to be precise and a kawi is more forgiving so ease and reliability in a scratch hull is a must.

Then any other opinions like availability of aftermarket parts , superjet being the most and easiest to get compared to others that might be considered.

Im looking mostly for good reliable easy on the wallet low end hit options but dont hold back on all options because all opinions are important to getting it right. End result is important and I dont want to end up going down the wrong road. But Im just thinking out loud and would love to hear your opinions on what you would do if you were in charge of a scratch build.

a 144 OEM with the TBM thrust pump cone would be the best bang for YOUR buck. Personally i use a 145 MAG from Xscream for my 785cc yamaha.

carbon 160mm pump housing , titanium vanes , a 1200 motor . It is all about power delivery , pump volume and pressure coming together like Micheal Jackson and that former Beatles dude to form perfect harmony or thrust .

got that done yet?

Also depends on how much power you will have....

Well the first one will be for me. It will have a yami motor , 85mm flat top 5 mill stroker aftermarket cylinder fully ported and in the future it will have aftermarket cases and powervalves.

My thoughts are this , if anyone buys an aftermarket hull they most likely will have the cash to put a nice motor in it , so Im thinking a pump that has great low end hit in stock form and possibly upgradeable to a magnum. But stressing a big enough pump without having to go magnum. So my thoughts are the 144mm yami at the least but what are peoples thoughts on the 155mm yami or the 148mm kawi?

148 kawi? You running a bigger motor than the 5mm u spoke of earlier. Probably to big imo.

Please elaborate?

They use a 144mm pump on a stock 61x 701 for many years but 4mm bigger is too big for a highly moddified 840 or whatever size 5mil 85 flat top comes to? 4mm bigger is about a strong 16th of an inch around the circumfrance. Personally I would think leaning twords a 155mm would be a good thing for bottom end hit and not out of the possibility for a stroked yami motor seeing they run stock 760's in front of those pumps. 148 might not be noticeable above the 144 yami but real simple to mock up in a hull.

the ones that came in the octane were 148 12 vein mags I think, and they could work with the kawi coupler with alittle of your mcgruber skills im sure

so the mag is a 148 and the octanes stock pump is also a 148. hmmmm How available are the polaris stock pumps and how are they compared to the yami or Kawi? I need to find a picture of them.

Call eric malone. He sets most mid 800 cc motors up with the 145 kawi mag. If you are looking for a 148 I think the skiclinic has a couple maxxx5 yamha version pumps for sale. Decent price too. But if your set on a kawi then I would deffinitiely speak with eric.

I have a 144 mag in my primary surf boat with a 785 Xscream motor.....the mag pump definatly hanldes better..you can ride the whitewash.......if you pin the throttle you can actually feel the mag suck the boat to the water and keep it straight..

that being said, I MUCH prefer the feel of a stock pump in the waves.........I like a little bit of prop slippage when trying to slash or carve

polaris octanes come with a 140mm that's right. 140. 12 vein pump. not sure if it's a cheaper option, but if you get a complete pump, midshaft, and driveshaft it is bolt in for a superjet. the octane bolts to the hull like a yamaha, but has a kawi style shaft setup. so the pump will come out all by itself.

OK , am I correct in saying that the 145 kawi mag pump is used in the kawi 140mm pump hulls? So Im thinking that his hulls are set up with the Kawi 140mm pump and so his best option is the 145 mag?

The only thing I am set on , is trying to find the simplest way to put a pump into a custom hull. Making a plug and pulling molds. Im not looking for a good deal on aftermarket pumps. Im looking for a good middle ground wether or not I or someone who buys my hull uses an aftermarket pump or not.

I guess Im getting my answer. I really apreciate all the replies and hope I get much more of them. Seems like most people will say there is no substitute for a magnum pump.

Maybe I should ask this question , what stock pump would you choose? If you could not have a magnum , nor could you get a XXXmm stock pump knowing in the future you could upgrade to a bigger magnum. For freeride/freestyle/surfriding purposes what stock pump would you choose? I understand the power of the magnum , I have one in my ski. Im trying to figure out if my thinking is correct and a bigger stock pump , to a point , is better for low end performance. And should I choose one over the other for certain reasons .

Again , thanks for all the replies and keep them coming.

So the polaris stock pump is kawi sized , 140mm , but bolts up like a yami. Thats real good info. And the magnum for that boat is 148 ? Thanks for that reply. Keep the info comming.

Polaris stock pump (on an Octane) IS a mag pump. Well, the Solas version of one.
