What Should I Do??

Location
Alberta
I should start out by introducing myself since I have been lurking around this site for the last few weeks. My name is Mike and I am from western canada(Alberta), I have been Jetskiing for two years now and I am now ready to step up from my SXi 750 Pro, not enough power and I think i would be better off with a new ski and get it set up for freestyle. My question is 08 Kawasaki or 08 Yamaha? Now I know this is a SJ biased group, but that might be for a reason. I will do mostly flat water but fortunatly the lake I ride can get some big waves, not quite like the surf, but should be large enough to learn BR's and eventually BF's, We also have two wake board boats at our disposal(mine, and my buddies, who has a 06 stock SXR and wanted to get into more free style) to do some jumping off of their "V" wakes. I don't want to have to reinforce the hull with fiberglass or carbon fiber, would this be nessesary on the SJ for the above type of riding:dunno:? I know that the SXR is a tank and wont need any reinforcing. Has anyone had the chace to ride a 08 SJ yet? I know the hulls have shanged so does that mean that they don't have to be re-inforced? I plan on doing footholds, hydro turf, scoop grate, bilge, new air filters, D cut the ride plate, and eventually a trim set up(when the money comes) on what ever I get. Will this be enough to learn BR's? Would I need more for BF's off of a "V" wake? Any suggestions would be very helpful since I am driving to Montanna to pick up a new ski in about 3 weeks. I looked for some used ones from that area that are like a year or two old but did not have any luck, any one know of any in this area? I have tried to do as much research of my own so I did have as many newb questions but I guess I still ended up with some, Partly becasue of the new hull of the 08 SJ.

Any info would be great, I have seen the vids from your freerides and have read tonnes of post, you guys know what your talking about.

Thnx alot,
Mike

ive ridden the 08..rides good especially for lake riding (personally i wouldnt own one cause i only ride surf and dont think it is as effective as the pre 08s for waveriding)..it still needs to be reinforced if your gonna beat it...id get an 08 for sure..

Would it be worth the extra cash for a modded 08? Does any one in the Northern states have one forsale? I Know alot of you guys are in the south, how much would shipping be? What would it cost for a aftermarket hull, complete? If i built one is that maybe a better route to go? I am very mechanical and i am experienced with fiber glassing, its just that jet skiing is not very popular at all around here and there is no one that i would be able to go to for help. sorry for all the questions its just the lakes are melting and soon i will be able to go out and i want to get a boat ready for the first weekend the ice is gone.

Thnx Mike

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't side sponsons on a 96 through 2007 be the same as an 08 hull? Seems more cost effective if you really wanted the 08.

no, the hull is totally different-narrower in the rear. i think it was ross's o8 that had tubbies on top of the sponsons

not to mention the set-back pump

the sj in any case as of what your riding now willl be a great setup...you get a pipe a head and a few other goodies on that thing(96-07) it will cost you less in the long run as for an 08 your going to pay out the ass for a new ski and all you are pretty much getting is a redesigned hull...take our word and find a pre 08 sj to suit your needs :bananapowerslide:

You'll have a hard time finding a modded 08 SJ.

I would advise you to stay away from reinforcing for a while.
Many new riders read that they have to reinforce their Superjet or it will buckle like a paper airplane.
For the first few months, just ride the thing. See what riding style you like, become familiar and comfortable with the ski.
If after a while you really do find yourself attempting rolls, backflips, etc, go ahead and reinforce.
But for heavens sake, just ride. Save the wrenching/glassing for later.

OK I think i may be leaning towards a sj, but I am having trouble finding anything thats close to me, there are some sxr's that are 8 hours away, but those are new,and I am starting to think I do not want to go that direction. Does anyone know of a sj forsale that is closer to Canada? A modded one would be nice but I wouldn't mind if i had to do the work.
How high can you jump before you have to brace these hulls up? I was easly getting six feet and up off of the bigger waves. I am at the point where I tried to lean BR's at the end of last year, but i found two things out, I needed more power, and foot holds are a must:crutches:!!!
If anyone knows of any forsale plz let me know, It does not look like there are many members on here that are from MT but i guess its worth a try. Instead of asking where to reinforce I am going to do a search first. then i will ask my questions second. But would a SXR be that hard to roll?

Thnx for all the posts, they all were quick to respond.

Wait for a nice 96-07, that has footholds, a b pipe, aftermarket head, grate, prop etc... Nothing amazing but you should be able to land a nice ski in here for 3500-4000. Get it shipped up to you and pick it up at a truck depot/carriers dock. If your near Calgary or Edmonton there are hundreds of companies that bring freight in from the US.

Unfortunately for you, Alberta prices have increased significantly. Most likley you'll find the ski for you on the East cosat. Expect 600-900 for freight costs. Because Yamis are Jap made, you'll have to pay 12.5% duty + GST (AB has no PST if I rember right). But you'll pay this off the sale price (3500)

A nicely built 96/97 will last as long as any 07.

Or even better have it consigned to a place just across the AB border, pick it up yourself and decalare it at the border.
You won't need a customs broker and you'll honestly save 200-300 by not bringing it into Canada in freight costs.

High jumps are not what kills the hull, it's landing sideways.
The bottom is plenty strong, the sides are thin.

I was easly getting six feet and up off of the bigger waves. I am at the point where I tried to lean BR's at the end of last year, but i found two things out, I needed more power,

If you're getting six feet and higher of waves, you could roll a 440. You don't need more power to roll at those heights.
