What surf report do you guys trust the most?

You're very kind to inquire, but, my neck problems have solved themselves....for now. I'm all good. Just old guy stuff. Seems like they want to cut you for a case of the sniffles anymore. Scare you into spending.

BTW: The last storm,(Irene), was awesome! I didn't ride on Friday. I was up and looking at the waves b4 dawn on Friday. It looked blown out and choppy to me. I watched it throughout the day... the same. Some folks showed up at the spot and had a really good time, but I had my money on Saturday morning.
And Saturday...all day was great! West wind cleaning up the faces...ALL DAY!!! 8 to 10 clean-up sets. Yes a bit smaller than Friday but way cleaner and more ride-able.

Irene, for me, goes down in the record books as some of the most fun since Bill!

Good to hear; he will go in for additional surgery, if necessary (my point was, he went directly back to doing everything in the world after his first surgery, instead of taking better care of himself, typical male, so he then messed up something different). Take care of yourself.

And I trust you guys giving actual surf accounts about as much as I trust Magic Seaweed (no pics/didn’t happen). What I was inquiring about was access, for I too am concerned what can/will occur to the residents there, if it has not been cleared.

bouys mean everything...see what the buoys says then look at the surf..then next time u go u base your opinion off previous observations and buoy readings..after doing it for years you get it pretty dialed..i can tell u exactally what the waves will be like at every spot in my area after looking at the buoys..where do u think the surf report gets their info from??

That's what I've been trying to say...............

buoys mean squat, maybe an indicator. But local surf shops do a better job after swell is immenent.

buoys looking pretty good at the moment haha

Wave Height : 8.5 ft
Dominant Wave Period : 20 sec
Mean Wave Direction : SSW ( 196 deg true )
Water Temperature : 59.7 °F

That's likely true on every coast but this one.

The inward dip of the coastline reflects the gulfstream. To reach the "hot water" you must run your boat out 60 miles from Jacksonville or St. Augustine.

The "buffer" that we have from hurricanes is because of this. Go south and the gulf stream is as close as 5 miles offshore...Fort Pierce area.

Waves are not dictated by buoy sizes at all in this area. The bottom takes on a whole new personality in this area. Dragged smooth from shrimp nets and much more shallow than where the buoys are placed.

You have to go out at least 40 miles to reach 100' of water.

Although shallow we lack the hot water that storms feed upon. They stick out there with the gulf stream.

But, when we receive the swell...it is a steady groundswell because of the gradual decrease in depth.

Wind becomes the major factor.

Dan, you should just give up, lol.

We do not have buoys set-up off of the coast of Africa. At that point, we depend upon various tools other than buoys (satellite imagery and ship reports for instance) to make forecasts, until the systems move in closer to us.

we have a local buoy off of St. Auggie. But it rarely reflects what happens at the shoreline.
Wydopen is looking at something completely different. The buoy here would be closer to 87 degrees f.

Suzi has not been reaaly active in this.

Sorry to say, it has been me.
Buoys 40-60 miles offshore mean absolutely squat when it comes to the surf we might get.

UNLESS it's a true groundswell. 8' wind driven waves at the buoy mean absolutely nothing at the shore.

Dan,

1. Do you really believe that our fine Mayport Men would benefit from a buoy in St. Augustine worth “squat”?

2. Do you really believe that the ocean floor is unknown to D.O.D.?

3. Do you really believe that the scientist at NOAA (and then many more) do not account for the topographical variations (as well as other crucial data) when forecasting, and can do it much better than you or any surf website/surfshop?

I usually read several and of all the surf forcast sites available, www.surfline.com is consistantly the most accurate here in North County San Diego. I say most accurate as surfline is off quite a bit, just not as bad as the others.

Show me some 59 degree water on ANY coast of Florida this time of year...... ain't happenin'.

I don't understand what water temp has to do with wave size? The buoy I posted is only 5 miles off shore if that. The water is always cold here. I can tell by the swell direction where it will be hitting and where it wont be. Buoys give the wind readings as well Very easy to form your own opinion from the data.

his point is the buoy is so far offshore it has nothing to do with the the local conditions. If he had a local buoy that was 5 miles offshore it would probably be pretty useful.
