Other What Will Happen???

With Kawasaki and Yamaha having made their last ski and the upcoming ban on 2 stroke in certain places and a fairly big decline in the interest; what will be the future of the hobby? I assume that certain parts are going to become less available over time making it a bit more difficult to repair older skis. I know the Benelli is continuing to make their ski, which is a 4 stroke, but from what I hear a pretty useless freestyle ski. Just curious on what people's thoughts are on the subject. I'm afraid that once they start getting banned at certain places it has potential to spread to everywhere else which would be devastating.

I think there will be quite a fight put up in response to any bans or upcoming bans. In my opinion, a key argument will be the number of 2-stroke engines on fishing boats. But, you've got people who will be in favor of bans, and they have deep pockets. As far as decline in interest, I think interest is slightly increasing. I am seeing more stand-ups lately and know of several people who want to get one. And as long as we have good aftermarket companies that we support, parts will be available.

Dont worry about it and go have fun. The industry has already become independent of Yamaha and Kawasaki. Engine bans are largely for new manufacture and wherever there are too many wealthy people living. The real killer of mass produced standups is in the fact that kids arent making enough money and banks arent willing to lend to this high risk group anymore.

You can say that again. Oh, wait, you already did. :)

Yeah I am hoping that there is a fight on the bans that are happening. One place that is banning is Lake Powell which is an awesome lake that I like to go spend time at. I think it is crap that they singled out PWC only and not 2 stroke boats...for now. They will not allow any PWC with 2 stroke unless it is a Direct Injection 2 stroke or 4 stroke. So that bans every stand-up ski besides benelli's 4 stroke pretty much. Is there any reason why no one has made a 2 stroke DI engine for stand-ups? I know that it is a little more complex than a standard 2 stroke and probably costs a little more but I can't see it being overly expensive.

Most of the bans are lake related anyway right? I don't worry about it being in the surf. Shoot, all the lakes have dried up in South TX.

When either of them develops a marine specific 4-stroke or DI 2 stroke that they can use in both a stand up and an entry level sit down, I think they will jump back in the game. They need a motor they can also put in a sit down to garner the sales to justify the R&D for a stand up that sells in very low volumes.

It seems like used Superjets and superjet part prices have gone way up since Yamaha announced no more superjets. $1000 for a used RN hull? I paid $1200 for an excellent condition complete and running RN 4 years ago..

I think popularity is increasing alot. When I first started riding (2008) there was hardly any standups at the lake. Now, a normal saturday will have almost as many stand ups as sit downs. Last weekend I saw two 2012 SJ's at the lake

im pretty sure all of the standups and older 2 strokes are grandfathered in soo i wouldnt be too concerned about it.. our country hasnt gne completely liberal yet haha

Don't blame it on the liberals. It is mostly conservative rich people with yachts who think they 'own' the water and want anything buzzing around it gone that are funding these groups in the name of the 'environment'. REAL environmental groups have wayyy bigger fish to fry than a couple stand ups riding around.

btw...just saw an immaculate RN go for $1800. on Craigslist. I missed it by a minute! Lots of people are going aftermarket and dumping their SXRS and RN. I think there will be plenty of skis to go around. Don't forget, you only need 1 ski to ride, right? Just don't sell it! hee hee.

The real questions we should be asking ourselves are.......When will the zombie apocalypse hit, and will they be riding couches?
