they are on the right way. throttle drum in the back, diaphrams in.

Yes thats right but the carbs on my 701 38 s are the other way but i just learn that the pin is inverted on the 38 s

Also guessing that you were feeding pipe cooling jacket off of the heads rear water bypass.

is that bad? thats how mine is set

Got it all torn down and yes... the bearings on both sides of the rear rod are done. Once I pulled the crank it all fell apart. Strange how it seemed fine until then.

The bottom portion of the bottom case has a nice little groove in it. Hopefully its ok.

crank bearing cage coming apart. take the whole motor apart and check it. thats what it is
