Keep the pump loaded for the first couple tanks (keeps the cylinder pressures up to seat rings) and take it somewhat easy.

this is a neverending debate. However, the method that made the most sense to me was this: vary the throttle a lot, cut and carve turns and gas it when it is planted solidly in a turn. That makes the engine work harder for that little bit, which helps to seat the rings better. (It is cylinder pressure that seats rings not the metal springiness itself). Do that for a tank of gas or two and then ride it like you stole it...

EDIT: dang it, I type too slow!

Heat Cycles.

First cycle: let it idle up to operating temp, then ride around slowly varying the throttle but staying at or below 1/4 throttle for about 5-10mins. Let cool.
Second: idle to operating temp, ride around varying throttle staying around 1/2 throttle for about 15-20mins. let cool.
third: warm up, ride around 3/4 throttle and keep varying the throttle with a few short full throttle bursts for another 15-20mins. let cool.
fourth: ride it like you stole it

And do not use sythetic oil during break-in.

after 2-3 heat cycles i do a couple long prade laps holding it steady at half throttle "brap" it every now and then double ur oil on first tank. after first tank you should be ready.. i do one extra tank of easy riding just to be safe break in period is THE MOST IMPORTANT on a 2stroke

break it in right and it will last a long time for example i do a 15 gallon break in on my cr500 = i get 5 years on a top end ( and no i dont ride like a P*ssy)

Steady throttle is the last thing you want on a new engine. Varied RPM's and load is key. Most important factor IMO is not to get it too hot. RPM and load aren't going to hurt it, heat will.

never run synthetic on break-in, to be safe run 10 gal. ( 2 stock tanks) 40:1, vary the throttle, keep the pump loaded, avoid extended wot. I have 7 years on my last top end with 180 psi. Have fun!

Run that motor at variable speeds with constant throttle blips allowing it to heat up and seat the rings, stay a way from full throttle, first run mabe 10min and let it cool down between runs, each run go alittle longer little harder after a few gallons of this she be ready to let her rip, remember after that first 10min run its good to go hard for the next couple or it will be a turd for life because slow breakins can glaze your cyl walls

Out of all the top ends I have done this^^^ is the procedure I used. Simple and it works. But if you had a motor built than do whatever procedure the engine builder tells you.

load it up to maximize bmep in cylinder for better ring seating.
vary rpm's but ride it like you stole it once up to temperature.

New Engine/Top-End Break-In Period

Note: NONE of the engine break-in can be done out of the water!

Proper break-in of your engine is the most critical aspect for determining the longevity and performance of your engine. Engines not properly broken-in will often fail within the first minutes of operation. Ring failure and piston seizure are the most common symptoms of an improper break-in procedure.

For a pre-mix system (mixing oil and fuel in the fuel tank), you should richen the oil ratio to about 25:1 for the first ten gallons of gas and add the SBT break-in oil to your normal pre-mix oil.

During the first 10 gallons of gasoline, there should be NO full throttle operation. First idle the engine for about 10 minutes to ensure that the engine is properly warmed-up. Then begin varying the throttle position up and down, up to 20% throttle for a half hour. Then come back and let the engine cool off completely - it should be a good 30 min break. After it cools down, you may now ride it up to 50% throttle for another half hour or so. Then come back again and let it completely cool down again. Now you can go out and ride up to 90% throttle. Continue this for the remainder of the 10 gallons, never holding one throttle position for more than a few seconds. Do not run at a steady throttle position and do not go to 100% throttle.

For the second tank, you may ride normally with one exception - do not hold it at 100% throttle for more than a few seconds. After the second tank of gas, you are completely broken in and may ride anyway you like.
