someone once told me they used air tanks on the skis in Waterworld so they could do deeper subs without the ski running out of air. But this person thought he knew more than he actually did about skis. I doubt that was the case but it is an idea...
the skis ran on compressed air alone, the movie was shot in a marine reserve, so no 2 stroke allowed

I did not know that. I suppose you are in the business and would know better than most people.

I would say 96-97. One of the early Rick Roy videos showed them when he was talking about his setup. The first ones were just the rectangle toe holds if I am not mistaken.

Earlier, Rick had them(rectanglular cut) in his 95' square.

i love the "Roll your own" part ...lol

hows that work?

I was reading about air engines the other day. Based on what I read about efficiency, either those guys rode for about 2 minutes at a time or they weren't compressed air engines. The best currently technology is struggling to get a lightweight, purpose built, low hp commuter vehicle to go 30 miles. I'm not saying it's impossible, but at least doubtful. Idok, they use compressed air to move the pistons instead of combustion.

superjet 113, i used to own that ski in the mag shoot you showed, it had lifters in it. I also owned the following years roy ski and it had rectangle toe holds in it. So i'd say 96.

At the time all his stuff was built at wamiltons shop, he had some crazy secrets in those skis. (at the time) His boats in 95 and 95 are comparable to most peoples setups now.

I had the first FX1 that came over here, I think it was 1994? I cut a rectagular foothold into that just on the right side. I just cut the hole out, dug out some foam and glassed straight onto the foam. Things were much simpler back then.
Chris.

Funny how a foot hold thread ends up about the waterworld skis. I tried to upload a scan of the splash article on the 550's, but I kept getting an error. I'll try again later.

The first footholds I saw were rick roys at virginia beach in 94. My buddy taught loyd burlew how to do a sub in 89 down at monster hole. :439:
