When should you start wearing a helmet?

I ride almost all flatwater, I wear a helmet in surf (only tried it once) and in the Kern River (once). On the lake I rarely put on my helmet even though I busted the bridge of my nose open once when learning to sub. I only keep it on hand for when I am attempting rolls, which hasn't been my thing lately.

2 weeks ago took my buddy out riding on my RN. Its about his 9-10th ride, he was just practicing slow turns on FLAT water. He said "Im not jumping wakes or doing anything crazy, so I'm not gonna wear the helmet". 20mins later ski slid out under him and he wacked his head bad on the bondrail somehow. He immediately went back to the truck and got the helmet after that. Always...

If you are riding with a group of guys and you happen to see one acting like an idiot, put on the helmet. :ugh:

If Wild Bill is anywhere around put on the helmet.

Don't be so sure. There have been times where I've hung on and still fell out. The worst was in shoulder-high surf and I became disconnected at the apex of a backflip. I fell right under the ski which then proceeded to fall from 10+ft up onto my helmet.
I had a headache for the rest of the day. Without a helmet, this could have been fatal.

Even on flatwater, I hit my helmet on the pole often enough that I never accidentally forget to put it on.
Dont get me wrong helmet is the way to go, like you said 10+ feet i would be wearing some no matter what. I need to make a center piece for the helmet cause i stil hit my face with the back of the ski somehow with the helmet on.

i always ride with one. the only time i on occasion dont is when i´m tuning.
i think of it like this. i´m on the water if i get hit on the head and get unconchess(sp?) it´s bad. so a helmet would help that in any situation so i always try to wear one.

I never did in flat water till i broke my neck and was out cold on the lake. My buddy rolled me over but i ended up with pinched derves in my spine. And gopros are always fun. Walmart sells mountain bike helmets for 40 bucks that work great.

Jesus thats insane. I rode a little earlier and was bent over my ski a little far and hit a wave. Smacked the side of my face on my chin pad. Helmet in my near future!

im surprised its not mandatory yet like life jackets. they require u to have a fire exstinguisher on a pwc but not a helmet? sounds pretty dumb to me. blown ear drums are no joke. ive blown out each ear over 4 times jus from wakeboarding an now i cant even go under water more then 8 feet with out em poppin from pressure.

I always wear a helmet. There have been many good points for safety, but it definitely gives you confidence to throw down. And the chick dig factor isn't bad either. I rang my bell messing up a bronco 180 with a helmet last summer.

in the dumbest state of the union (florida) its a law that you have to wear a helmet when riding a bike but not on a motorcycle...
