thought i would share this option. Race face Atlas Bars, Race Face Atlas Direct Mount Stem, Race Face Strafe lock on grips. All intended for downhill mountainbiking and proven to be very strong. Probably not the cheapest option but i thought i would share. Did the same to my last 650sx too.

I'll post a picture tomorrow but the plate was already messed with by previous owner so it looked bad. I put it in the mill centered the pivot hole and threaded 4 holes for the Mtb stem. So it's screwed directly into plate.

Guy before had cut the plate down and even a bit crooked and tapped just a hole. I weld filled his :):):):)ty holes

Looks good, I like that you could rock them forward for a shorter pole feel

yeah i think he took an inch off the plate already. technically the MTB stem probably put the bars back about 50mm because of how the stem works. and how the stock bars are more forward on the plate because the clamps are in the middle of the plate and my stem hangs over the back. Different stem could be used that doesnt hang thats just how this particular stem works.

The bars do have a good sweep so rolling them forward would change the feel a bit. but many mtb stems come with many holes to mount a stem forward or backwards for adjustment range. BTW the bars were 800mm long i cut them down to 760mm

this stem below for instance has three settings to move forward and backwards.

What is the cost of this conversion for someone that does'nt get the parts for free? Still have old steering. Great idea if you get the parts for free and have access to a mill for sure. $100 for the stem, $40 for the machine shop sound about right? $10 for hard ware? So $150 and some labor sound close?

I can get stuff at discount if you're seriously interested. Or you can buy the parts used on pinkbike.com i could help you find a decent used setup

the hardware comes with the stem when new and most purchases with used they include them.

I can get candycomponets stuff for a good deal they have stem and bars http://www.candycomponents.com/

If you went used you could get it all for under 100 including bars. As far as the machine shop im not sure what they would charge i used my own mill.

The holes to drill are 50mm x 35mm rectangle 50mm being the width and are a T6 bolt. Dont drill until you get a stem and fit it correctly. Technically you could do it with a drill as theres a little room for slop.
or i can get raceface ( whats on mine) http://www.raceface.com/ they even have carbon fiber bars if you wanted serious bling

i didnt have my stock pole on and never did so im not sure if you could run a bar with a rise. Mine pictured is 1 1/4 inch but to avoid your pad when turning you might want one with little to no rise. im just not sure on the clearance.
