Originally I did it for legal reasons to pass beach patrol at Daytona but found it worked so good as a front foot hold, I never took it out.
Most lakes I have ridden on required one as well and I have been stopped numerous times and checked for one.

The only reason I was thinking about doing one is I heard they check down in Daytona. I ride mostly lakes around here and haven't been messed with in the past two yrs. But plan on doing some surf riding this summer so just don't want to get hassled or a ticket. OCD you making those yet? lol

At Daytona you won't need one for the 4 day event... Just pay Nick, no beach inspections... If you buy a beach pass just have one with your ride gear... I just got a pass and didn't have one... I've never had one on my ski, lol
You definately don't need one for riding at daytona. Occasionally, one of the beach patrols will ask if you have one when registering your ski so i keep one in my truck if they ask. Just bring one with you just in case but you will be fine.

Tom21 makes 2 foot holds. One is a normal hold and the other holds an extinguisher. Both are pretty nice.
The reason to keep one is because they are required. Requiring a stand up to have it is dumb, but it can be like $100 ticket, and some of the cops can be douches. I've had patrol give me a hard time at the lake just while I was standing on shore. Told me if I didn't carry my reg with me he was going to give me a ticket next time for over $100. I like avoiding trouble. I have a stock hood and am keeping the stock holder so it's a non-issue for me.
There are other options other than Tom21, but I was at his shop a few times when he was designing it and it looked pretty sweet to me.

I can vouch for Tom21's front foothold although I do not use it for its intended purpose.
I carry my tools and long rope there....Ha ha!
