I want to take a trip to spectate some serious freeriding...which would be a better trip to take - going to World Finals in Havasu or to Surf Slam in Oregon? Both look equally appealing online but I'd love first hand advice for someone who's been there.

If you want a well rounded event with chances to demo skis, good weather, and bikinis - go to WF.
Surf Slam is a really good event, but consider that it takes place in a tiny little Oregon town with one bar, two restaurants, and one gas station. Weather may be good, it may be foggy, it will probably rain.
Don't get me wrong, I love the atmosphere and have gone every year since 2006 - when it was still the Blowsion Beach Party and not Surf Slam. You get to meet world class freeriders from around the world, ride with them, get drunk with them, and pretty much run into each other everywhere. Lots of entertainment on the beach and great riding.

Just be aware that the weather is hit-or-miss, probably 50 degrees at night and probably not over 75 during the day. The water will be 60 degrees if you're lucky. The surf will be below 12 ft if you're lucky.

Here's Surf Slam 2009:

man I'd kill to get to either...

Every vid and pick I've seen of surf slam looks crazy big and gnarly. I'd love to go watch that event. For fear of death I'd probably just watch or putter around way out of the way close to shore.

Whoa. Thanks Matt, after seeing that pic I'm sold on which event I want to go to.

Blowsion said they will post the schedule next week, but since you're a veteran - if I only have two days to watch, should I go for fri-sat or sat-sun? I'm not riding. Even if I could bring my ski I'm not even going to pretend I'd have the balls to tackle 12' surf.

Sounds like we have someone sold on Surfslam. Good choice! In regards to which days do Sat & Sun. Friday is amateur and qualifying.

If you need more convincing watch this:

For tons of video I have shot at both events go to my web site for all the links:

I'm not a racing fan. I like freestyle and freeride. WF I shoot maybe an hour of flatwater freestyle video. Surfslam over 6 hours of awesome surf competition.

I go to both events. You need to work on being able to do that next year. Priorities!
