Where's the best place to buy or have a crank rebuilt?

Location

Starting fresh with an engine rebuild. Engine will be stock 701 with exhaust and girdled head. If I have a serviceable crank core, where's the best place to have it redone with good bearings, tolerance checks, etc? Secondary question, wheres the best place to buy off the shelf? Considering jetmaniac - SBT route.

SBT route is least expensive and most people have a good results with sbt. Hotrods might still be selling 701 cranks too. Just make sure to use oem seals and quality gaskets.

Jetmaniac sbt. Stuff like that nowadays. Is on the quality of the equipment more than the operator. Sbt has the deepest pockets to have the best equipment to efficiently, effectively, rebuild a crankshaft.

Best is somewhat subjective as you have to weigh up front cost vs long term reliability. I have multiple Competitive crankshafts (Jeff seebold built with oem webs, ADR rods, and japanese bearings). They are around 650. I also have an SBT in a JetManiac 718 that’s been going for nearly 10 years. They are something like 350 if I recall right.

That’s about as long as I am going to risk that crank. It’s going to be torn down this winter.

An OEM crank (or equivalent) can last 20ish years on stockish skis no problem.

I really should get hour meters lol.

You can occasionaly find a good deal on oem cranks. Wait for blackfriday and places like partzilla to have a 10-20% off coupon.

I think they are like 1200. So 20% off is like 960 plus tax. Still steep. I’d go competitive if I was looking for something on par with OEM. I have hard good things about c57 (Chris steenbock I think is his name) but I have no personal experience.

Top secret dont tell anyone. The 760 crankshafts are cheaper.

Look for used bottom ends on eBay. 650 engines go cheap a lot of times.
650 is a thinner web crank. Preferred in years past - illegal in certain racing classes because you were only allowed to back date same model. SJ 650 is a different model than SJ700. but anyways requires welding for phase protection in high hp motors and racing high HP twins is a thing of the long gone past.

I have a cryo treated welded oem rebuild from Competitive crankshaft. Ran in a limited superjet for 4 years sat for 8 years and now in my superstock for this year. I am probably tempting fate but so far I’m really impressed.

I'd go used oem over sbt as well. I bought a competitive crankshaft built for a 550 5 or so years ago and it was very nice. Upgraded rods and Japanese bearings. Jeff was awesome to.deal with. I wouldnt hesitate to send him another crank again. Wsm is a good option if you can find one. Sbt used to do a decent job on their cranks about 10 years ago. Im not sure what happened since. I knew a guy who used to ride skis 7 or 8 years ago get a sbt crank for his 550 Reed engine. The front crank bearing lasted about 2 months before it let go and put a hole in the cases and the bottom of the sleeve leaving the cylinder unrepairable. Sbt sent him a new crank for their 1 year no fault warranty. It would've felt like a bad joke to get a warranteed crank for an unusable engine. He bought another engine and sold the crank haha. Ive heard of several similar stories with their cranks. Then again i know of another guy i ride with that had a sbt crank in his et 967 that held up to 5 or so years before rebuilding the engine and the crank still looked decent. SBT= Shoulda Bought Two
