650/X-2 which carb?

upgrading from my stock 28mm on my 650sx this season, I can get a 38mm keihin for under a hundred bucks, so is the 42mm kehin or even the sbn 44 worth the extra 100 bucks over upgrading to a 38? Gracias amigos

I had a sbn44 on my 650 conversion ski and it ran great. I personally like mikuni a little better. For me, it would be worth the $100 for a bigger carb and one I'm more familiar and comfortable with.

The stock 38 is big enough for for most 650s. Get a 1991-1996 manifold to go with it. Bigger carb have little benefit without a good pipe and 6800+ rpm.

I use the 40 mm Keihin with matching manifold and it works well for me. Have mild porting, head and full Westcoast exhaust. Everybody will tell you to get the SBN, I see no real need. The Keihins are less $!

Anything is am improvement over the stock 28mm. Both 650s I have run 44mm, one with a Factory Pipe other with stock. Like kevbo said, a pipe and carb compliment each other. Just what ever you do get the carb before a pipe otherwise the pipe will suffer from a lack of power from the intake side I found out.

Some people run dual 38s, so keep in mind you can get twice as much fuel flowing, and dual 38s ~ 44mm

thanks for the input, it does make sense that the pipe and the carb compliment each other, I'm still on stock exhaust for now, but I've been thinking about doing that exhaust mod over on pwc. Has anyone gone from a 38mm to a bigger carb and noticed a HUGE difference?

There is not much difference between a 38 and 44 until the pump load is lowered. A Coffmans pipe will do a lot more by itself regardless of pump load. Worry more about getting a pipe instead of the size of you carb.

So do you think its more logical to get a 38, and put the extra money towards exhaust? thanks kevbo

If you cant get it all at once then get a Coffmans and a low piched prop first. Those items will make the most difference.

I had a 44 sbn on my 650, westcoast pipe and a 15 strait edge skat and it is night and day compared to stock. I agree with kevbo for the most part. I would recomend doing a pipe first ( Factory Pipe, Westcoast, or Coffmans). Then I would buy the sbn 44 and matching intake. Then shoot for a prop. you can get old strait edge prop for cheap any more but you will get way more from your ski if you do a cut back sxr big hub swirl prop.

I have a 42mm Keihen and a manifold for sale. The adaptor plate was damaged. I welded it but am no longer running 650 motors, so I never sanded the adaptor back down. It will also need another long bolt, as the replacement bolt that was on it was not the right bolt and is what damaged the adaptor to begin with. You wouldn't need the adaptor plate if you had a keihen manifold, but all I have to go with it is a mikuni manifold. You would still need the replacement bolt regardless, but I have 1 so it can be matched. Carb looks good, probably doesn't need a rebuild, but it's been sitting a while so it's probably a good idea.
