Which mods to get? - 650 Superjet

I have a 93 SN and I'm looking for more low end power to be able to get a higher launch off my setup wakes and was wondering what affordable upgrades might get me that extra HP I'm looking for? I'm leaning towards possibly a pipe and/or impeller (OEM /aftermarket). Is it even worth spending the upgrades or should I just sell it and get a 701? Or just sell the motor and swap out for a 701? It's a bone stock super clean ski.

Also I really need footholds and a guy said he'd do it for $550. $200 for cutting/installing footholds and $350 to returf. Seems a bit pricey but I don't want to start cutting out my tray and risk screwing anything up. If $550 is normal then I'll do it. Just looking for others that know the going price to give the thumbs up :) Or if foot straps would be a cheaper and quicker alternative then I'd be up for that too.

Thanks!

Most guys do their own foot holds on here, as far as mods yes get a 701 but at the same time if you get a bpipe for that 650 then save up for @JetManiac built motor you'll be more than happy and you'll have a pipe to put on that fresh new ported motor

After upgrading a couple of stock 'ski's with new parts early in my career I got smart and decided to only buy 'ski's modified by others. I see 'ski's with $1000's in parts and many hours lavished on them sell for little more than their stock equivalents.

A stock 650 is so far away from a mildly modded 701 it's not funny. My advice is to leave your 650 stock and save up for a suitably modified 701. Try and buy in the cooler weather and sell your 650 at the start of summer.

Yeah seems that's what everyone else recommends. I've never ridden a 701. Only a few Kawi 750's for a few minutes. How much do Superjets differ in terms of power and handling? Is it drastic like upgrading from a 600 to 1000 bike?

A stock, mechanically fresh 650 is probably good for around 50 HP. A twin-carb (38's) 701 with a Factory 'B' pipe is probably around 80 - 85 HP. Run 44's and a higher compression head and you'd probably be in the 90's. The standard Superjet is still eminently rideable at these output levels.

No, It would be like going from a 600 to like a 848 or abouts. Its enough to put that silly grin on your face but not enough to be at 12 oclock if you punch it too hard

I have ridden a couple 650s that ran pretty hard. You can can stick with mods that will switch over to a 701 in the future.

Start with a stainless impeller like a 9/15 hooker or pick up a used skat 9/17 or solas 13/15

Bpipe will work on your 650 and future 701

Shave the head on your 650 for higher compression. (185psi) You can use a file or belt sander, or take it to a local machine shop. Probably cost around 80$

Or skip all the foolishness and just buy a JM781, good used one in the for sale section ;-).

A 650 with a pipe and head makes about the same hp as a stock 701 dual carb. so I would just get a 701.

You sure they werent messing with you? Thats the least accurate way of surfacing anything i could think of

Just looking for a bit more oomf to get more air. I'm not lucky enough to ride in the surf otherwise I wouldn't care to mod. I think the 9/15 hooker will be a good start. I don't plan on modding the hell out of it or anything. Just seeking options for a quick upgrade for slightly more low end power.

Lots of options for a 701 upgrade. Milling your head with a sander or file is about the most absurd thing I've seen suggested in at least a month. Milling involves re-cutting domes, that ain't happening with a sander. Getting a B-pipe will cost more then an entire used 61x 701, keep that in mind.
