Which to build 760 or 61x cyl.

Hello I did a little research but still unsure. The engine is a complete stock 97 760 and will stay pump gas stockish. Either cylinder I use would get a bore, port work and new pistons. Now remember this will have the stock head, 44 carbs and a b pipe. Do I send the 61x or the 760 cyl. to a machine shop. This will be a spare to cover any down time for the summer incase I brake the lamey again. Thanks for any insight lpw says sell and find another lamey lol.

A well done 760 cylinder will spank on an average 61x, but all things equal the 61x would be a better starting place for what you do. A LOT more money to make it the same displacement, though. You really should get a girdled head if you're gonna spend the money to port(on either cylinder). Cylinders really do crack. You could always just keep a set of domes to run with the head shell from the Lamey because you won't be needing it for the Lamey if it's blown up.

Hey Charles..

can you more specifically define 'well done' for me?

I plan to widen exhaust port, clean up the transfer casting flash and mismatch.

Girdled ADA, increased compression, MAYBE some static timing advance, MSD enhancer, dual OEM 44s... B pipe..

what else? or what different?

its an experiment for me, but one that I would like to work well!

Thanks!

Keep in mind that with the 760 electronics, you can't run an msd enhancer, and also the stock digital ignition decreases timing to the rear cylinder. Also, you will need to get the squish band on the front cylinder deepened so you can have the head milled for more compression. The rear cylinder's dome comes from yamaha with more squish to slightly lower compression ~10lbs. I recently found this out after buying a 760. Luckily I will be running an aftermarket girdled head, and I have 61x electronics.

I sold of the 64x stuff, and plan to run 61x stator, flywheel and E box.
( including an MSD enhancer)

Ive got all the stuff ready to bolt together, im asking for advice on the setup, tuning, compression, timing

I just mean that a well setup ported 760 can run as good or better than just an average "freestyle" ported 61x. That's all. Nothing secret. Just really dialed in with a good prop/nozzle/pipe/compression/porting/ignition package. I think the complete package is really what makes all the difference.

I know. :) I wasn't refering to your situation. I should have quoted the guy. It took me a few minutes to finish posting my comment.

Although now that I think about it, the squish band is so tight, you would probably have to get both of them recut anyway to get the head milled.

I am following you now Kennay.

but im betting Lou plans to use the same ignition from his Lamey on his backup engine if it comes to that.

and also, as Crammit suggested, It would make sense to use the head there too.

Ah. I just saw where he said "Complete 760" so I figured he was using all the stock stuff. I hope I see you sometime after our ski's are done so we can switch ski's to compare 760's. I think I am going to leave mine stock ported for a bit. I am going with the dual 46mm carbs chuck has suggested as well. It will be nice to see how the combos compare. Are you doing any case work?

Lou needs to correct me if I am wrong but he wants a complete drop in.

I would just bolt it in as it is and let her eat. Don't spend any money. I don't think you can go from a high horsepower motor to a very mild motor and have any fun anyhow. So it would just be a pacifier until your lamey comes back from the shop anyhow. Just something to get you on the water for a few weeks. Just my $.02

And fat girls will slide into about anything with enough baby oil.... WOW that was some good times.. Umm O wait .. nevermind
