If it was 1999, it could not have been RR in competition. He had retired at the end of Havasu 1998

The first I remember seeing one was Rick Roy did a Backy at San Buena Ventura beach in CA in a competition. It was at least 1996 because he was riding a Roundie. To fully appreciate the impact you have to remember the scene at the time, Freeestyle was held during a break in the surf races and it was generally lame. Most freestylers where trying to do hood tricks and avoiding the surf altogether. At that time a Back flip wasn't even on the radar, no one even thought that such a maneuver was even possible, so when he pulled it off it was so unexpected that every one was completely stunned. Not only did he blow every one away, he opened up a whole new side of the sport- Surf freeride

Ok guys found my vid and its Rick Roy doing the first ever back flip in competition. This is on ESPN2 back in the good ol days with Ralph Sheheen and Robbie Floyd. Ive been online since late 1995 and my cousins owned a ISP at the time and I had a T1 connection at their office and was able to save videos which would of taken hours/days to d/l on a modem back then.. lol
Also guess what? It was on his 95 red square which Im sure some will remember. I also found a archive of pics that I saved from back then too..
EDIT: Pretty sure this vid was on his black SN, but just like the one in pic below though. I remember when I first saw this video and it blew my mind back then!
