You don't have to worry about your chin pad ripping off maybe? I think it looks cool depending on the style of pole, kinda like the streetfighter look.
Your asking for a cracked skull and broken jaw riding without one, even with a helmet it is sketchy. I have smashed my shoulder doing a re-entry on my installed pad and i thought i broke it, imagine no pad ouch!
For a while I thought it was because people were running rrp steering on x metal poles and the supplied chinpad wouldn't fit over the steering. I have no idea if that's the case though.

All you have to do is find an aluminum spacer, a longer bolt, and a little shaving to make it all fit. I didnt have a problem doing it to my x metal pole w/ rrp steering/riser bars.
I never understood it but I rode my ski all last summer with out one. I didn't mount mine because its a piece of garbage and doesn't line up with the mounting holes on the pole and I'm pretty sure it's one thin layer of glass.... I need to reinforce it and turf it and just throw it on so I don't smash my teeth.
because the OEM yamaha's are crap, and an RRP one costs $150 used $300 new.
In all my balls to the wall riding I can only remember my face coming close to the Chin pad a few times. My knees have hit the bar area WAY more than my face
That being said, I rode without one because I couldn't find a used one in matching color. Got it now!
It only takes one good hit and you people will install a pad ..........its only a matter of time. Come and ride some big (cold year round not just winter) California surf and you will want all the protection you can buy.
