Less is more.
It's rather simple. Been a member since day one, literally. But I don't come around that often any longer unless its for parts. Several reasons for this forums decline:
Being in the web based business myself, as well as architecture and design, this website has too many options. For a person using it there are way too many forum features/sub-forums that spread individuals out too much. This spreads out the wealth of information, which is why we all come here: it adds value through information on a sport we enjoy. The main forum pages has what looks like 35 different options to choose to post in.
Example: The forum for each individual stand-up make/model.
Sure I don't ride or work on a 550 Kawi anymore, but I sure as hell started riding on one, tricked it out as best I could and remember how to repair it. Back in the day guys that had moved up to superjets from 550's would see my posts in general (only place to get info for repairs 4 years ago) and offer their advice. I then built relationships with/rode with some of them. It made me want an SJ. Today am I ever going to check the Kawi 550 sub-forum of this site? NO. It adds no value for me. But I'm sure I could answer some of their questions and add value for the users there. What this means is less interaction with the members that hangout over there and those that don't, ie. less building of relationships-- which is what creates a community feel of any forum.
In the early days here there were four or five forum choices. Everyone hungout in one place and got to know eachother. What are all the social media websites about these days? Building relationships, connecting people, and utilizing those relationships. Now on this website many users don't have any interaction with one another. The valuable information in many of our minds is spread to thin amongst subforums that it never reaches those it is of value to. When someone used to post a ride video in general, everyone saw it. It created buzz, and exposure. Now there is a ride video sub-forum, personally I don't care to go seek videos here- typically we get the same thing there day in and out. It is not exciting, and far fewer people visit this section than general so it gets less praise or veiwing, ie. less value for the person creating and posting the video.
Solution: Reduce the number of main forums. General, Race, Freestyle, For Sale, Rides.
A thread used to hold all the information about one ride in the rides forum, sure you had to search for some info within that thread- but often times the original post was just edited/updated. These threads reached 20 pages. And you're damn sure you read every post in there. Now there is too much, and too overwhelming. Things are scattered too many places. Interactions are not being made, what does all this mean for you? The value you gain from coming to the X is less. You do not benefit as much.
I nearly failed out of school because of this site (JK, kind of) because I was here so much. Now I may check it bi-monthly. I am here so little I don't even know who runs it any longer (SuperJETT? --who has done a great thing for the sport we love, by giving so much of his time to maintain a place for us to chat). These are my thoughts as an outsider that has studied online media/marketing, runs a few websites, and frequents other forums. Thanks-
