Why is water being pumped into my engine bay???

Any thoughts on how that happened? Was it rubbing on something, corrosion alone, drilled a screw through it?? Makes me glad I have access to the rear of my hull where the lines come through for sure!

I just gave it a tap with a rubber mallet to break it free then pulled it out the back. it looks like it was just corrosion that caused it. it was a gold coast surf ski for most of its life before I bought it so I guess 17 years of pumping salt water has taken its toll. I pulled the bilge pipe out as well to inspect it and it looks fine. I made some new pipes up and have reinstalled them.
I haven't opened up the hull for a defoam/refoam yet but as soon as I get my footholds and turf kit here (Christmas presents) it will be time to bring in Mr choppy choppy and Mr wire brush with his mate 'electric drill' and make a huge mess in my garage again. In the meantime I hope to get a few rides in and run my freshly rebuilt motor in. It will probably handle like a bit of a waterlogged pig but its way to hot to put on my leathers and ride my r1 at the moment.

I'm wondering if you were able to get any of the water out of the foam in the hull without tearing out the tray and foam? I think the foam in my tray has water in it as well so I wanted to know if you had any success in getting any of it out?

I drilled out the rivets in the exhaust end cap and some did start trickling out. Stood it up for a few days but only got about a cupfull out of it. I cut the tray open and dug out the foam to find it still pretty saturated down low. Was a few litres swishing round in the very bottom. It all seems dry up in the sides though.image.jpg

Thanks for the reply. So is this picture where you're at now in this process? Was it hard to get all that foam out?

What foam are you going to use to fill it back up with?

How are you planning on putting that square back into the tray?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out if I'm going to do this myself or not.

Wasn't that hard to get out, used a big flat screwdriver and popped out chunks. Thinking about using styrofoam in the bottom or something waterproof and 2 part foam over the top of it. Probably will install drain bungs in the tail too. The piece I cut out should be able to be epoxied back in and then fibreglassed over. I'm doing footholds too so the whole tray is getting a layer of fibreglass to strengthen it up as there are a few small cracks developing. I used a random orbital sander to remove the old turf glue. Ate it up in about 10 minutes flat. This is the hole I have to fill.image.jpg
