Blaster WOT. How long is too long on a Blaster

Location
Orlando
I've been breaking in my freshly rebuilt 701 and my mechanic told me the scars on my pistons were partly due to overheating. He said I should never run WOT for more than 6-10 seconds as this can lead to seizing due to overheating.

I was wondering what you guys thought.

Mine is not stock. I think it's bored 1mm over. 80mm Pro-X pistons, ported cylinder, milled head, slightly advanced timing, Riva Red Pipe, Riva waterbox.

I've been a little concerned since he warned me.

Not sure at the moment being that I've only run 1.5 tanks of gas through it since the rebuild. After the rebuild, my mechanic said it was just shy of 200 psi. He said once she breaks in it should be around 175-180 psi.
You using race fuel to break it in? 200psi should at least be a mix of race fuel and 92, if not then yeah don't hold it wide open very long.

Who said "can't"? I simply stated he said he doesn't recommend WOT of more than 6 - 10 seconds at a pop. I'm pretty confident in his ability to build a great motor. I've seen his work and his carbon fiber blaster is a monster.

That's why I came on here to see what other people thought. I don't really run WOT for long periods of time, but I used to run WOT for several minutes at a time prior to the rebuild. The pistons that came out of the ski were pretty scarred up. He stated this was due to overheating and the fact that they were older Wiseco pistons. He said the Pro-X pistons would be much more durable.

It's like with so many other things: from the following three, pick any two. Because that's all you can have.
200 psi
WOT
pump fuel

I'll double check the compression when I get home today. So far I haven't kept it WOT for more than 10 seconds at a time. I've run it for roughly 4 hours since installing the new motor.

I run 200 psi on my own motor, and I use a 3:2 mix of 100LL avgas/92 octane pump gas. I also use a programmable ignition to retard timing in the upper RPM's.
My boat is a lot lighter than a Blaster, thereby imposing less load on the motor.

And I still don't run WOT for more than 10 seconds (it's probably more me being chicken rather than the motor not being capable).
IMO, it's amazing that your topend survived as long as it did.

Thats an easy question to answer...till it blows the crank bearings!

I agree with ryan as long as it tuned correctly then you shouldnt have a problem Problems come when people hold them WFO with no load on the motor or no cooling water. Running just a hair rich will never hurt , in fact might save you in the long run. Just my opinion.
