WPS Battery woes

Not a big poster here. I spend most of my time lurking off other threads and get lots of great info so I thought I would throw this out there.

A friend and I have been running a 62T charging system with a few different Waterproof rated WPS battery's. When out of the water I we have tried methods of simply not charging or have used the recommended automatic charging system. Doesn't seem to matter which WPS battery is used, they last 3 months and are done.

These batterys weigh about 2.5 lbs vs a 16 lb Odyssey batthery so the weight saving is Huge. Has anyone had any luck with WPS battery's, if so please share the part numbers and your secrets

I’ll start this off by saying I don’t understand batteries very well, but I’ve heard (from smart people) that lithium batteries, such as these WPS ones are not made to be used with charging systems.
Now, on the other hand, when I worked at EME, we had someone with an EME 1200 and charging system who used a WPS battery for about 2 years if memory serves me right. So, who knows...
We also ran WPS on all kinds of motor combos with MSD total loss. I can’t remember any of these batteries failing with total loss.
The WPS reps are pretty awesome. I’d suggest getting in touch with them and see if there’s something they recommend.
 
I use it on a non charging system- but I do charge it with a normal battery charger and never leave it on the charger after it’s fully charged- don’t float them

Mine lasted 1 yr plus without sealing anything. I charged it with a battery tender charger a half a dozen times and never had an issue. (It probably didn’t see much water because it was up on a limited slip tank) but great product 0 complaints. The charge indicator stopped working after I cranked it with a tender hooked up tho. Part number 2516 (490-2516) I think. I also used the smaller 140cca on my 1107 without issues as long as you weren’t cranking it much but I never killed the battery. I swapped up to a bigger one (2516) and have had no issues this time either

I’m on year three with two battlefield being used as test batteries, Lake day batteries, and were both swapped a dozen times into random skis each year. I charge them when they run out of juice. All systems have been charging systems.

I have 15 year old crappy Li-Po R/C batteries that still work. Bubbled up a bit, but still hold a charge for the duration they should.

I ride my SXR daily, and put a lot of hours on it each year. I'm blaming user error if your WPS battery go kaput after the first month.
 
Maintenance and proper storage is the key with these batteries.

Avoid completely discharging lithium-ion batteries

If a lithium-ion battery is discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, a safety circuit built into the battery opens and the battery appears to be dead. The original charger will be of no use. Only battery analyzers with the boost function have a chance of recharging the battery.
Also, for safety reasons, do not recharge deeply discharged lithium-ion batteries if they have been stored in that condition for several months

Lithium batteries should be recharged whenever voltage drops to 13.1 volts, or sooner. If you have a vintage, custom, or off-road vehicle which has NO draw on the battery when key is OFF, then you should only need to charge your battery once a year. However, most modern street bikes have a draw even when key is off, to support clock, computer, alarms, or other devices. This draw will eventually drain the battery, which is damaging and could void your warranty. So if you are not riding twice a month, then you should charge the battery every few weeks. “Smart” lead-acid chargers with automatic cutoff may be used for periodic charging, but will NOT work as a tender/maintainer and should be disconnected immediately after charge has finished. Older lead chargers without automatic shut-off should never be used. Improper charging is dangerous and will void your warranty. A Lithium Chargers - with Store Mode - is highly recommended for anyone who rides less than twice a month. Alternatively, you may disconnect the negative cable from the battery for storage, and charge once per year in that case.

for what its worth. I have seen a few wps batteries come and go in our group. My brother and I run charging systems and both of us have had very good luck with shorai lithium battery LFX21L6-BS12. Several riders have bought this same battery in our group and they too have been happy. Our buddy, rob, cracked the plastic housing cranking down the terminal screw to tight on his, and they sent him another one for free. I seal the seams and terminals with permatex rtv. My brother and I both have gotten 4+ years (still going strong). We always disconnect the battery when skis are not in use. Monitor voltage, although the voltages have never dropped below 13.3 volts. They have truly been maintenance free.

I think impacts have a lot to do with lithium battery life as well. I always wrap my batteries in as much foam as I can.

I am also on year 2 with a Battery Tender BTL24A360C lithium. I have been happy with this one as well. It to seems to be a good battery for a cheaper price. I haven't done a thing to it either.
