650/X-2 X2 at my doorstep

So i came home yesterday and this was waiting for me in my front driveway.

Buddy was sick of it sitting around and gave it to me.

He said it ran fine untill he went to start it one day and a wire going to the cdi fried when he clicked the start button. I have no idea about how these work but am good at turning a wrench and am going to fix it up with a new cdi box and wires, new seat cover, new traction pads, a carb rebuild and drain the tank.

all i can tell is that the bars look to be aftermarket and possibly an exhaust with some nice tig welds. ph
I'm not sure what year or what motor this is. Can someone tell me please?
It was last registered in 03 and i think that may have been when it last ran so Any other advice on maintenance/upkeep would be greatly appreciated.

everything seems to be there accept for a wire thats snipped at the cdi box mounted right under the handle bars.

Looks to be an 87-92 ski, need a photo of the rear bulkhead behind the motor, or the last two digits of the HIN number to narrow it down any more.

Looks to have a stock pipe, possibly an aftermarket carb (Snap a photo of the side of it).

Also, oil injection has been removed, so be sure to run pre-mix in it!

First thing I would do is pull / re-build the carb, pull the head and verify the cylinders look ok, oil them up, and re-install the head / check compression.

that looks like a stock 650 pipe. it looks like it still has the crank case vent on it. it would be a good idea to buy the $15 block of plate and not risk the seal going bad and leaning out

Id love to know some background on it, did your brother build the front a-arm kit on the one he sold? Looks like a total chaos nock off kit with Foa coilovers

thanks man, i've seen your truck around. You know Ryan P right? Ryan hitched a ride with us to the con for the 4th this year in my old cherokee. I've since parted out that jeep and picked up a ford courier on 40's running all yota and propane. I love the crawler seen to.

Anyways i'll definately have the x2 out on folsom lake all summer so i'm sure i'll see you out with ryan.

thanks, i love the excels, such a sweet looking and durable rim. And the fact that they match the yota rims was a convienant coincidence.

Congrats on the ski... you're on the right track. I would replace fuel lines, fuel filter, rebuild carb, clean tank.
As mentioned, crank case vent and lube cylinders.
Maybe test compression, but not necessary.

Also, don't use starting fluid.

I can't seem to get all the water out of my hull. Is there a product you guys put in hull to help absorb the water without leaving a mess?

Was given shamwows a year or two ago at company Christmas party, only thing they were ever good for...

Just dry it out as best you can if it fills with water again the first time you drop it in the lake, it could be a leaky drive shaft seal. Mine leaks all the time, but have a bilge and don't ride it as hard as others may. You can replace the seal, it's pretty easy. Pretty sweet X2, it's in better shape then the one I bought a couple years ago. I am forever fixing the old girl, but love the heck out of it.

Selling my built SN SJ this spring to put some more into my X2. That is love for the X2 and blasphemy here on the X. Haha!
