In all seriousness, what's wrong with that foam? I never even thought to use cooler foam but I feel like it would work pretty well.
It's heat molded from beads of polystyrene. When it gets cut or broken, water can seap into the bead structure. It may work fine but I definitely only want to do that job once. Extruded polystyrene is the way.

Is that the same material that came in front of the water box in the FX1?

I don't think so. The oem foam is much stronger, more flexible, and chemical resistant. It's thermoformed beads but way better than cooler foam. I have a 90 x2 hood foam here it's still soft and flexible. Those pieces will last forever as long as the thermoformed outer layer isn't broken or cut. I've had to replace my hot tub cover a few times. All it takes is one crack from being stepped on and it'll weigh 300# in no time.
