So then how can it help performance? It doesn't make sense.

Its a combination of benefits reducing not enlarging the stinger that is being done,the outer sleeve separates the water into the jacket,rather than spraying through the exhaust stream,this also cools the coupler better and directs the water directly into the waterbox, id assume you could run the stinger and waterbox drier and still not met stuff.
Its not necessary with a 900+cc motor on a b pipe,the exhaust wave and the pressure have to be totally different on a motor that large

I think Blue/Chris tested a B pipe (Stock/ XS Mod) back to back same motor & conditions & said he didn't notice any differance in performance. Not 100% it was brought up with some engine pipe questions in a group of people.

I ran XS mod B pipe on my 865SS setup and never had a problem....
