Yamaha blue gel coat

My superjet is sill the factory 2001 blue gel coat (top deck) with original graphics. about 4 years ago i repainted the bottom of the ski an lowered hood/ nose the matching blue using colour rite paint. It looked great for a bit but i ride a lot so after a season or so it started getting scratched and flaking. I loved the look of the blue top deck and blue bottom deck with all factory graphics and i want to do the same thing again. This time i was going to look into gel coating the bottom and hood if i could find yamaha blue.

My questions are, does anyone know if this is available? and anyone had experiance with applying gel to a large surface like that? i have done many small repairs to boats using factory match gel and has good success but i have never tried to do a whole ski. worst case i can do the colour rite paint agian but im lookinf for a more durable finish.

just use a polyurethane single stage like u500 or Imron

I wouldn't gel-coat the bottom, doesn't stick to smc that great. Your need a gel-coat gun, compressor, etc to spray gel coat, your have to wet sand/buff when done, it'll have orange peel.

You can gel the bottom as long as it’s prepped properly

I didn't say you couldn't, but there is better paint to use on smc. That's why factory uses epoxy on the bottom deck.

So what paint should i use then to match the factory blue? i want it to match. I have all the gear to paint and or spray gel my dad runs a boat repair facility and they do it all the time. I thought about taking a sample to an autopaint place and get a match which is an option aswell. Also can buy the paint from colour rite in quarts and could spray it with a gun. Not convinced the aerosol paint is the way to go this time and hold up.. and its over 100 bucks for 3 cans.

I understand the effort involved with applying gel but i never considered the adhesion problems with smc. Good info.

I use Utech u500 it is an AkzoNobel (Sikkens) product on boat and ski bottoms. I spray Sikkens at my shop and I am able to scan the colors in house and have the utech delivered. It is comparable to Imron. Imron is good too. It is a Dupont (now actualy Axalta).

Ya, just take it to your local PPG or Dupont dealer and have them scan the hood paint with their photo spectrometer and get some single stage polyurethane enamel and be done. Ive painted lots of bottom hulls with the cheaper PPG Omni MTK and they always held up.

I've had good results with nason base clear paint that was custom mixed from scanned part. If you have the hull scanned it should match pretty close. The bottom hull, I use interlux epoxy, works really well and none of the gelcoat hassles.

I have shot them using Imron or Awlgrip, as well as the PPG single stage paints.
All of them held up just fine. In any case, here is the color codes for the early Blue SJ’s
The blue changed to a differant blue mix about 06? If memory serves me correct?
Like others have said, just take your hood to a local paint supply and they can scan it and mix exact.
