Yamaha flywheel lock

Hi guys, I was looking for a flywheel holding tool online and the only one I can find was $50 from cold fusion.

I can see that theirs is pretty nice but I feel I can weld something similar together if I can fin a junk starter bendix to take the gear from. Has anyone done this before?

Any other less expensive tools out there?

If anyone wants to ship me a junk bendix I'd be willing to make 2 of the tools and ship one to you.

There's rope.

Your idea would work you make it adjustable on the front cover bolts to ensure complete contact.

I'm sure their tool is awesome but it's something I won't use often and would prefer to spend my limited ski budget on parts that I need rather then a tool I would enjoy making myself anyway.

I've been debating on lightening the flywheel since I have the 62T which is the heaviest one, I can handle the $100 if it makes a difference but I also want to do carbontech reeds and have to do a few other things to make it all work. I've come to the conclusion that theres no such thing as a direct drop in swap lol. Thank you :)

One of my friends donated a bendix with a galled shaft that I'll be using to make the tool. I'll post a few pics when it's done, maybe it will help someone else. Thanks for your replies.

aimsmall: If I was going to build one, I would build this all-in-one tool which puts absolutely no stress on the aluminum engine case. It is the bee's knees:

I have a drawer full of different tools I've bought/built over the years for holding the flywheel but I haven't touched any of them since I got the cold fusion tool.

I got mine used in a package deal otherwise I never would have bought one but after using it a few times, I feel it's earned it's keep and my respect. Anything happens to it and I will order another in a heartbeat.

Yes, you can build one. Can you build a better one for that price? ;)

Wow, the one e350 posted is awesome but way out of my budget.

Agustaf, maybe I'll make one like yours and weld a nut to a removable plate in the center to make a flywheel puller out of it too.

Thanks for all the input

Honestly I don't see the need for one... An impact will get the bolt off just by holding the flywheel by hand. To reinstall it a block of wood on the MAG piston or rope down the plug hole. Been doing it this way for over 25 years with not a single issue.

I don't like the idea of using the cases with a blocking tool like a bendic because I have seen cases cracked that way.

But to each their own.
