Yamaha Fx-1 Fx1 701 61x please help low power

Yamaha Fx-1 Fx1 701 61x please help low power

I know it’s a long post but I have been hitting my head against a wall for about 2 months and any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Okay so here is the list of upgrades on the ski (I know some may not be relevant)

-1995 FX1

-aluminum AC pole

-B pipe

-20/25 swirl (fx1 pump)

-Wetwolf freestyle cone

-JD rideplate and intake grate

-Buckshot 44 with k&n flam arrestor

-Never opened 61X (perfect paint on head bolts) with 145psi in both cylinders

-umi throttle and controls

Okay so my problems and what I have done.

I bought the ski never riding a FX1 but owning an 85 js550 and recently bought a 93 550sx (still have). I knew the 701 had to be faster then the 550sx but how much you can’t really get a feel for on the forums, but I have rode a SN superjet (stock with a protect pipe).

First time out (fresh water Puddingstone) felt like cavitation problems bad, hard to get on plane. Got home and did the following.

---Pulled pump went through everything on it, took out conventional skat-trak 18-23 repitched to 20-24 (for sale fyi) and changed to the swirl 20-25 with the new cone. Checked the pump shoe mating seal and it looked great. Filled engine compartment with water to check for midshaft leaks and water came out somewhere between a constant drip and a stream. I replaced the midshaft seals and bearing and madsure the housing sealed properly to the wall.

I rode again (this time at Fiesta Island bay salt water) and the ski rode better for 2 mins then the rev limiter felt like it dropped until I couldn’t get on plane.

--- Changed to a new coil with brand new msd boots.

Rode again (Fiesta Island) did the same thing

--- Dried off boots and put dielectric grease on the spark plug boots

This time stuff changed to how it should be(at least I thought). I was now able to jump the ski with a set up wake and do all the normal stuff slide, full speed runs. Had more power than the 550sx by about 15% could slowly pull on the 550. (I know that is still running like crap now)

After telling my friends that it got so much better. My friend pulled out his FX1 61x with b pipe and stock everything else but 140 kawi pump and decied to go to Fiesta Island to ride. He jumped on mine and in 5 seconds turnd around and said “this thing is a piece of Sh**” I was confused, I though it was great. But of all people he should know he has had is hand on 5+ fx1s over his years. I jumped on his and my mind was blown. Yes it did have the 140 pump but it was truly 2x as powerful. He was set on it being an electrical problem still so I did the following

--- Changed CDI to known good, nothing changed. Unplugged over heat sensor on head from cdi, nothing changed. Changed coil again to one pulled from a blaster and nothing changed still. Went home pulled the motor out of frustration and went over the whole electrical system. Checked stator voltages and resistances and it all checked out good. Pulled flywheel off and the stator looked like new off the showroom floor. Cleaned all grounds in ebox and put dielectric grease over the grounds so no moisture could destroy them. Looked at sparkplugs and found that both the tread on caps were lose. (yea I know I got laughed at for not checking those first.) put new plugs br8hix in both cylinders.

Took it to pudding stone and as I went to go put it in the water it backfired and blew to waterbox open. I was very upset but I got that far so I put it in the water anyways with no hood on and tried it. Something told me that the problem wasn’t fixed still, considering it wouldn’t get on plane even with the hood off.

--- Took the carb off and checked the reeds and they looked perfect, the metal reeds looked still tight and new. Took the buckshot off and went through it. Carb looked great ( the jetting looked like it would be rich Pilot-132.5,needle and seat-2.3, main was 132.5, high screw was 1 5/8 out, low was 2 ¼ out. Went through the rest and everything looked great but the internal filter was ¼ full with stuff. Put a new filter in and going to seal water box today and test again on Sunday.

That’s where I’m at and I don’t know what else to do besides taking the carb and coil off my friend’s fx1 that I rode, which may happen Sunday.

And help would be greatly appreciated. I have exhausted my knowledge and searched forums for hours on this problem.

why dont you talk to your friend with the fx1?

check your timing, check your prop to wear ring sealing.

I have. He has helped me this far and been at his house most the nights this week. Timing was spot on when we inspected the stator and the impeller and ring were perfect when I installed them about 1 hr of runtime ago but I'll give it another look.

Not really being a buckshot and so hard to tune if they are wrong. I am going to try my friends stock 44 from his 61x.

Try turning the low speed and high speed up a half turn and see if it gets any better. If it gets worse turn them down a 1/2 turn and try again. Also go to Factory pipe website and see the recommend jetting for a single carb with bpipe and check that your carb matches it.

I'll give the 1/4 turn a shot tomorrow. When we pulled the carb last night we were scratching our heads on the jets and needle that were used with a pop off pressure around 17. We were hesitant to change it because we have some custom modified carbs from jetworks and the tuning was is completely different then they are conventionally on stock carbs. I will defiantly be taking the carb off my friend's 61x with a b pipe and seeing how it runs.

I've rode a fx1. The stock pumps suck bad compared to a 144. Like its incredibly noticeable. The one I rode was stock and clean as could ever be so I'm sure it was tuned fine. To me it felt it cavitated bad. All the time. I'm used to superjets tho.

Edit; a jump from a stock fx1 pump to even a Kawi pump is gonna be a huge increase in putting the power to the water. I'm not saying that's your problem, but don't expect a ton from that pump compared to his.

I got it fixed it was the carb. The stock fx1 pump does suck but with the swirl and cone it hits about 90% as hard as my friend's fx1 with the kawi 140 and a cut down sxr impeller. I have a bolt in 144 waiting to see water, but saving it until i get a 10/16 hooker.

What exactly was off about the carb?

I replaced it with a stock 44. The buckshot has to low of a signal to dial in easy. Since this I have gotten the 61x ported, epic cdi, taper bored 46, 144 pump with 08 sj impeller and it hits and pulls harder than any other 61x I have ridden so far.
