I'm unfamiliar with the FX models. I know they're 4 strokes but don't know the mount spacing/pump size. Anyone know if I can transplant GP engine/pump/electrics into a FX hull without too much fab work? I have a bullet proof GP that I've had for several years and like that it's easy to work on/maintain for company to ride, but the GP hull is a POS and rides like hell. I can snag a FX 140 hull for cheap, but would consider any decent riding 2-3 seat (Seadoo/kawi's etc) hull for a transplant.

Well the FX140 idea flopped BUT...I got a lead on a 2001 Yamaha XL 1200 with a seized engine...FOR FREE! Everything else is good to go. Best of all it's less than a mile from the house. I know the XL came in 800 and 1200 varieties that year. Anyway to transplant my GP 760 guts into that? I'm making a huge assumption but I remember multiple hulls that ran a 700 to 1100 platform with engine mount spacers making up the diff. If not I'll sell the GP for a 1200 and stuff it in.

Just keep it simple. The 800's n 1200 PV were a breed of there own. Plenty of good hulls with bad motors out there for both style gp's. I had a customer ask me how to make his xl700 faster? Should I put a bigger engine in it? I said just buy a xl1200. There's plenty of them out there. Not worth the agrivation. Yes people do put bigger engines in different hulls but they are recreating the whole thing knowing it's a process n a project. KISS rule-keep it simple n smart

Agree. I have a complete ski that I don't care how fast it goes. It's just rides like shizz. Runs great with a crappy ride...and a complete free ski minus a power plant. I'm trying not to put a dollar in either one. I'm not splitting hairs here just asking those in the know. They're for kids or company. All I care about is reliable and safe.

Just shim the ride plate on the one you have like I did or buy an aftermarket one. Problem solved. There are threads on it at pwctoday.

Who cares if it handles like crap. It's a guest ski, they are probably having the time of there life's and wouldn't know the difference between a good riding hull unless they rode them back to back. If it goes bang bang I'm sure thats all that matters to them

Agree, agree, agree. Not trying to reinvent the wheel...and REALLY don't want a build project. Shimming the ride plate is prolly best answer. Ur right @DAG, @McDog and @CHRISRACERX...All the guests want to do is drive in circles and get wet. I had a 16 yr old nephew here over the 4th and he was dogging the skis handling and its porpoising at higher speed is what got me thinking about a swap. I figured the free complete hull would be plug and play with my engine/electrics if I had the mount spacers.

I was in Phuket a year or two ago and noticed that all the sit down rentals were very beat up Yamaha FX 2 and 3 seater models.....I asked them to pop the seat so i could look at the motors and big surprise ...all of them had single carb 61x 701 motors hooked up to the stock 160 pump.....it looked stupidly simple....huge engine bay.....tiny motor lost in there .....the thai guys said the 4 strokes crapped out after a year or two when they bought them after the tsunami, but the stock 701 engine runs the big hulls even with 3 up for 5 -8 years easily and are much easier, cheaper to fix... I just had to test one....it planes easily, fast enough for noobs but no snap at all...to be expected.....but all considered....a very cheap safe reliable and modern sit down conversion ...great for visiting noobs to your lake...I know if I popped my own FX160 short block I would most likely drop in a TPE1105 and save serious cash in the process.. I guess in the US the emissions regs would get you though
