Super Jet Yes, another solenoid clicking thread. Completely stumped. Need expertise!

a starter solenoid is just an electro magnet. when energized, it pulls a washer up and makes contact between the two posts, making the starter crank. if you hear it click, it means the electro magnet part is working. that does not mean the washer is making contact with both terminal posts. that needs to be tested with an ohm meter, to see if contact is being made. starters can also be the problem. if the brushes stop on a part of the armature, where the windings are dead, it wont crank. thats why sometimes if you beat on the starter, it will start working. if you zap across the 2 posts on the solenoid and it cranks every time, the solenoid is bad. if you zap across it and it doesnt crank or even spark, one time, its the starter. i have seen a lot of yamaha solenoids that clicked and didnt work. i'd start there. make sure you aint got a bad connection some stupid place first. also, if the black ground wire for the stator into the box is broke and or sometimes making connection, it wont crank. it wont click either. a wire can be ran from the block to the box case.

Picture in #1 post shows a badly corroded aftermarket pos start solenoid. Suggest you clean connections and use a good solenoid.

going through 3 solenoids that are junk is normal.

IMO buy a new O.E.M. solenoid. My brother stuck a new aftermarket solenoid on his ski and it lasted 3 weeks.

clean used oem solenoids are better than new a/m,
however if your starting system has a weak battery, bad (weak) starter, bad battery/ground cable, and/or connections throughout this can cause voltage drop and excessive heat which can prematurely destroy even a new oem solenoid!

Just tried testing the solenoid by disconnecting the cable running to the starter. Left the pos cable from the battery on as well as the relay pos and neg. Bridged the posts with an ohm meter, started clicking away and got no reading. If I correctly understand how the solenoid works, this should be the definitive test on the solenoid. No reading = bad solenoid. Now to find one before the weekend....

Thanks a ton guys. I'll report back once it's been replaced.

Also, if you're running a lead acid battery make sure each cell is properly filled. Low acid levels will still produce the proper voltage, but the amperage can be drastically reduced.

Big update boys. Swapped in a buddy's OEM relay last night and had her out all morning. Ski ran excellent with no cranking clicks or misses. Thanks for all the replies guys! Guess it is possible to burn through three crappy relays after all!
