Yz250f motors

I found a deal on an 08 Yz250f but the guy who had it threw the rod and now the motor is completely apart in a box. Nothing is marked or labled, just was curious how hard it would be to rebuild with just a manual?

I'm decently inclined when it comes to engines but the thought of dealing with all the bolts, nuts, washers, retainers, clips, etc. has me a bit worried.

Guy said he has a new cylinder for it and wants $1200 for the bike.

Any thoughts?

For $1,200 it's a no-brainer, even with no engine! I'd first try to find a complete engine for it.

Ebay has some complete motors for around $1500. I guess that would be the easy way out.

Buy it and send the box to me for assembly, I love projects like that! Just did it with a GP800, nothing to it.

Lay out all the hardware first, identify each bolt using the manual and place them into ziploc bags labelled accordingly. If you're organized it will be a piece of cake.

Right on guys, i think i'll try and tackle it. Definitely want to go the cheap route instead of buying a whole new motor. I've done top end kits on my Cr250 a couple of times but never messed with a 4 stroke.

Get a good torque wrench. That is a smoking deal, I have been looking at getting a YZ250F. If I found an '08 for that price I would be all over it.

usually on the 250f's if they throw a rod, there are other parts that will also need replacing. you also better check the cases and make sure it didn't bust them.

check out bikebandit.com and they show how everything goes together in pics of the parts.. i buy stuff in boxes all the time and use that for Reference.. sometimes you can come out on top other times well you'll learn something at least.. i got a 450 and its great! man you'll live the bike

when i blew the motor on one of my yz450f's, i found a complete, used motor on ebay for like $1200 and just parted mine out for around $500ish.... just another option you can consider.. motors *DO* pop up from time to time on ebay.

also, register an account on thumpertalk.com and just start posting in the yz section there. tons of knowledge and support.

Yep, sell your motor in pieces and buy a complete replacement if you're feeling not so motivated.

Still waiting for some free time to go look at it and check everything out. Guy said the transmission is in pieces in the box as well! Fun.

tranny is housed in the same case as the crank... still all one motor... dont worry about it too much, if i can split a 4stroke and put it all back together, you can too. i'm about as dumb as they come.

just look at some online microfiche's it's easy to figure out where everything goes. if you're going to do it then fix it and sell it right away and pick up a kawi or honda. those yamaha 250 fourstroke motors are just time bombs. they have these same problems since they first made them back in 2001. If you do it, GET THE RIGHT TOOLS like holders to the shafts so you can tighten bolts, and whatever tools they say in the service manual for the job your going to do. it makes life so much easier. and replace the timing chain indefinetly. and if you keep the bike, replace it at least twice a season with those YZF's they have cheap chains and are part of the probelms they have with blowing up.

Personally, I would try and find a complete engine. I know it can be done putting it back together but that is a lot of tiny parts that will nickle and dime you if some are missing. If you have a shop build it, that can add up too. Probably the reason why the owner wants to sell it. He can't afford a full rebuild either. I just wouldn't want to be creaming up a double wondering if I got all the ins and outs put in the right places. A good service manual is lacking sometimes too. I couldn't imagine assembling a complete engine/transmission just from the bike bandit exploded diagrams. I would beat him down on price and try to find a whole engine. Yamaha's aren't time bombs either. You would think they would have everything all figured out being they started the whole modern fourstroke revolution. Perhaps the guy ran it without oil through a few mudholes bouncing off the rev limiter for an hour or two...

I'm heading out tomorrow to pick it up, guy just told me a price that i can't refuse. I'm betting there are more issues with the motor than just the rod so i'm gonna try to find a complete replacement for it.

Would love to drop a 450 in it!
