Surfriding Mag pumps in surf boats

Well.... I must admit I have not taken the time to read thru ALL the post on unacceptable surf mods . I know in general people don't like Mags in surf boats ..... However, I have an older 8 vain non set back I'm going to be selling and was thinking to my self ..... Self , I wonder how it would preform in my surf ski. It would be turning behind a Gomez limited 701. Any thoughts from guys that HAVE surf experience with 8 vain mags.

that might be pretty sweet actually...a liiiitle more hookup, but not necessarily the violent grab of something with more veins..

I've got a solas mag in my ski and love it in all conditions makes it easier to recover and easier/more fun to ride haven't rode a ton of surf but the little I did I loved it

mag pumps are the best for surf. i run the solas which is all stainless but i have heard of problems when running the skat because the stainless viens pressed into alum housing w/ salt water over time the dissamilar metals cracked the housing.

im not a fan...

i like my ski to be as loose as possible...even a deep top loader grate makes it too stiff for my taste...

the only time ive ever wanted more hookup is when its really really big and there is allot of whitewater to negotiate...otherwise its unnecessary...its all about weight distribution and throttle control..if you cant get your stock pump to hook up your doing it wrong..

my opinion is to sell it..

same here.....stock intake grate and all

I'd give an 8 veiner a shot, but would never put my 12V back in for surf riding again...

I have a 12 vane setback 144mm in my Matrix and an 8 vane 140mm non setback in my wife's SJ and they were both huge improvements in surf. I've never swapped them for back to back comparisons but both skis react the same in whitewater as I would expect and the 8 vane had just as much improvement as the 12.

I was on the fence when I first got mine and my transition is actually well documented in a couple other threads. Some say the Mags have too much hookup for surf riding and I thought the same but quickly discovered that the pump was not the culprit. When I swapped in a stock pump, my ski would still not slide out like Scott's AND I lost all the hookup and thrust that I was so used to. The mag is the chit for a reason.

Even my wife noticed that the Mag was a huge improvement. Granted the 8 vane is not as aggressive but it was still better. I installed it in her 07 SJ with the ported 760 and just told her I swapped the impeller. Her very first session and she came back and said the slip/hesitation right off the bottom was finally gone and that she got tumbled in some whitewater and the ski hooked up and pulled her right out of it like it had never done before. She freaked when I told her what I paid for it but she wouldn't let me take it back out so what does that tell you?

Edit: If I rode as much surf as Idok, Wideopen and many others, I would probably agree with them but I don't/can't and I will never get to that point where my riding is fluid enough. I knowingly use the Mag pump as a crutch and I am okay with it. :bigok:

i ride every day, i think the mag really helps. like wyd was saying about throttle control to keep a stock pump hooked up, its really the same to get a mag to break loose. throttle control is errrthang.

Same here, maxed steering throw, no intake grate. I like my hull super loose, hold the hull flat and it will slide for days, dip a rail to get it carve or turn the bars and blip the throttle to straighten out.
I have seen some people shred surf with mag pumps and others look akward like they where always fighting it. I would imagine the monster motors supply the power needed to overpower the pump drag and get it to slide but a mag likes to keep the ski traveling in the direction it is pointed and some people aren't into that.
I also never rode in huge surf where pump hookup was the difference between riding in and being rescued.

People who ride anything other than a SJ cannot be trusted to give accurate surf riding advice.

Thanks, you're giving me an idea. I shall henceforth hassle everyone riding that crutch of a SJ in surf. Real men ride 550's.

If you cant get your mag to unhook then your doing it wrong...
