Sounds like an air leak for sure, as far as the engine revving by itself. Usually it is a bad gasket on the intake side, carb and intake manifold gaskets. Could be a head gasket, flywheel cover gasket, crank seals as well. Leak down test will tell you if your cylinders hold pressure and if any...
