That IS the new style hull.

Open up the picture and you can tell the bottom has integrated sponsons.

I confirmed this when I was in Havasu. I thought they were getting rid of the old inventory as well, but their "new" price is for their new style hull. :veryhappy:

really? damn, that's a great deal then...

Motor placement is the same; longer and larger diameter driveshaft with pump moved back. The widened hull cannot match the aftermarket tubbies because of smc production. (negative draft). Sure would have been nice to see a frp bottom instead of the smc.

At least the B-pipe won't rub the sides of the hull after reinforcing.

Thats what I find most surprising... the cost to tool up a new SMC hull is way more than if they made molds for FRP. With the sales numbers being relatively low, I thought they would have gone FRP... and then they could have put more money into engine... top deck... hood? all of the above! :ponder:  :dunno:

... but the stock plate sticks out just like that

Wow, awesome. Maybe I should send Yamaha the pictures of my leg at the end of Daytona '06. If my plate had stuck out that much my leg would have been snapped in half.

first ride

I had a chance to ride the 08 today, at first it feels like a 96 -07 rn, but when you turn it hooks up much better. some will not like it, it is very hard to get the rear to slide around, reminds me of a sxr in that aspect. the nose stays up high and when you turn, you put your weight to the rear like the old rn. the wider "tubbie" front seems to make it more stable, and I did notice a chine wobble like I have heard guys that have tubbies refer to at lower throttle just above plane, high speed seemed stable and predictable.

I had no real trouble getting the tail to slide around, it just takes a different approach...

I quite like it, it's half way between a pre 08 SJ and an SXR.

I've never understood companies trying to match each other. How is direct competition a good market strategy?

The SXR has stepped up in the race leagues while the SJ is often the freestyle ski. Why would Yamaha want to make the SJ more like an SXR? I dont see them getting the kind of sales Kawi did with the introduction of the SXR. When the SXR came out it really didnt have a direct competitor on the race course. Seems to me like Yamaha would have been better served making the '08 SJ something the freestyle community wants; a good reason to upgrade. Instead they seem to be making the mistake of trying to please everyone, and I dont see owners of either relatively new standups "needing" this ski.

((DISCLAIMER: Yes, I know people freestyle on SXRs and race SuperJets. These are just sweeping generalizations.

PS.
Just curious, are tubbies allowed in most race classes? Or will the factory pseudo-tubbies on the new SJ be a significant advantage over older round-nose racers?

Hey Ottis, try to adjust the trim up a tad, I think right now that it is nose heavy like the SXR, they are hard to brake free, except when on the race course and they do it everytime you dont want them too!!!!!!!!!!

Talked to Tim Grey last night, he just picked his 08 up and really like's it. With 3 new sponsors for next race season, he is stoked about the new hull. BTW, he said not only is the prop stainless, but so is the pump. Pics may follow.
