They take reservations starting in April. Lots of upgrades this year, They are redoing the bathrooms, as well as adding water and sewer hook ups for RV/Campers, as well as WIFI service. Last year the majority of riders stayed here, This year it is RV only!

Option #3 South Torch Resort
http://southtorchresort.com/. South side of the lake not on the water but close to the launch.

Option #4 The Inn at Torch lake, 9076 Helena Rd, Alden, MI 231 331 4845. This place is kinda of hike to the sandbar. It is in downtown alden on the west side of the lake.

Option #5 Various rentals, There are several rental homes and cabins along the lake. Riders have said most our booking for entire weeks only.

Option #6 There are a few hotels in Kalkaska which is about 15-20 minutes from the launch. There is also another campground in Kalkaska.

Location:The main Launch (closest to the sand bar) is on the south end of the lake, Near torch riviera and torch river marine.
Not to scale, but you get the idea.

Rules: Do not come flying into the sandbar towards other boats and people!

150' from all boats.
Idle zone 150' from shore
Idle zone 150' in and out of sandbar (idle to and from sandbar)
Boat launch, river are also idle only zones, From the boat launch idle out to the bouys (its not that far). Torch Cops are aware of the faster idle speed for stand ups to stay balanced.

Also a Saturday in July at Torch does have some police patrol (mainly on the sandbar). I have been asked for registration before. Some of us are staying up longer than the weekend so lets keep it on good terms with the P.D. Once again if you want to drink you are adults, but I ask for the sake of the group that you wait to after the riding. We want to save face with the locals and the police and stay on there good side. Please save the alcohol for after the riding is done. If you choose to please do so discretely.

As many of you have heard Torch lake cops are not going to sit back and let you act a fool on the water. We are all adults if your ski isn't legal that's your choice. However, What is important to the entire group is that we don't give the cops a reason to pull us over! let them deal with the drunks on the sandbar and not us.

Couch Vwake:
I dont have any official times set up, but we will probably run this a few times during the day. Please make sure to give each other plenty of space, including space for the sit downs to turn around etc. If the day goes good, we may be able to let my fathers crownline take a few laps in the late afternoon for a nice wake.

Filming:
The couches will have cameras, So if you want to make the film get close enough where they can get a good shot!

Tshirts:
I will be selling shirts, I only have a handful. $20 each first come first serve, If I run out and have enough interest I will do a second order and mail them to you. Ill be set up right by the launch first thing Saturday morning for shirt purchases, and if I have any left then again in the late afternoon. I will be under blue easy up to the left of the launch.

Disclaimer/other info: This is a FreeRide! Don't expect Daytona Motosurf. Myself and SuperN8 will do the best we can to get everybody as much info as we can for the day, but we are not responsible for you (we want to ride too and enjoy our vacation). There is no set time or place you have to meet. The riding will take place west of the sandbar on south end of lake, a good place for a break is on the sandbar or the launch, so it will be easy to find other riders. Most Likely we will have a 2010 Black and white Crownline with a Torch Lake freeride banner on the sandbar. If you can bring scissor stand or some rope and tie up in between riding (if someone in the group is bringing a boat that works well). Most likely you will launch right next to the house I am staying at and see my ski or superN8's if we are not out already. Please don't stop her, unless my wife or myself are out there selling shirts. I am staying here with several families that are not associated with the freeride. We will meet on the water.

This isn't the best freeride out there. We have rules to follow to keep this thing going (but honestly its Michigan law), but this is America's most beautiful lake! So come out hang out, and enjoy the water!

Thanks guys! Can't wait to see ya'll out there!

Jordan you bring up a great point of riding safe!! Please hold off until after the riding to enjoy the adult beverages, I too would like to see this event continue on in the future.
Also I know it sucks but everyone should plan on being stopped by the Sheriffs/DNR for license and registration. That way no one can get pissy about them giving you a hard time about not having the REQUIRED paperwork to ride anyways. Last year I know a few of us used the waterproof cases like this, http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Dry-Pak-Floating-Waterproof-Wallet-Case&i=70410&str=waterproof&merchID=4005 to store the paperwork. It worked great!! You can clip it to your limiting rope U-bolt or even hood latch and just let it chill in the tray, it was kept out of the way while riding and it still provided super easy access if you had to stop and show the paper work, also make sure you have your MC numbers on and that they are visible too! I know we are supposed to also ride with a fire extinguisher but the chances of them asking to see that is very very small. I have been going here every year for the past 15 years and I have never had to show a fire extinguisher both from a boat or Jet Ski.
When launching your craft please remember that it is an idle only zone for the first like 500 feet, or until you are past the buoys. That is really the only thing the cops are usually checking. If you do that and ride respectfully usually the cops won’t even look your way unless you are someone throwing huge backflips in which case they may come stop you to know how you did it ;-) I seen them do that to a few people last year.

Also its Idle only 150' from the sandbar. So dont come in to the sand bar at full speed!

Also remember Michigan requires boater safety so have that as well.

As Nate said, We want to be able to keep this ride going. We are not trying to be picky nor are we gonna babysit, Everyone is Adults so please act accordingly. If we do what we are suppose to then we should have no trouble with the law! Like I said I will be applying for the event permit soon, Once it is approved I will talk to both county sheriffs and see if they have any input, etc. Ill pass the word when I get it.

Side note: I myself will not have a fire extinguisher and my registration will probably be on the hood in the pole area, but I will be carrying my paperwork.

We found out the hard way, the 150 ft idle rule applies to all areas of the lake under 5ft in depth.......
So taking off from the camp ground launch is on your belly for about 200yards.

The officers didn't ticket any of us, they just asked several questions about the boats and the sport in general.

I can't wait for this ride!

About the fire extinguisher and paperwork, It was pretty painless to install. I used a bracket from an sxr, and mounted to the inside of my hood, plenty of clearance inside. It's a good feeling knowing you're legit when you're riding around under the watchful eye of "THE MAN"Picture 176.jpgPicture 178.jpg

Late last summer i got a ticket for not having a fire extinguisher onboard. Not sure if they are checking more now or were just pissed at me. just a heads up to save some people 95 dollars.

Thanks for the post guys! Last year they didn't check for Fire extinguishers on Stand ups (only couches), but that doesn't mean they wont this year. Like I said we are adults, if you don't run one thats' up to you. The IMPORTANT PART is that we need to make sure we don't give them a reason to check our skis.
