44sbn carb on reed 550

Installed 44mm carb on reed engine, so I needed to get spacer for correct bolt pattern but now I cant use flame arrester cause it hits the hood.. Will a older pp intake manifold take care of this problem????

A pp intake won't work on a reed engine. Completely different bolt pattern. What kind of flame arrestor are you trying to use?

Reed engines came with 38mm keihin different bolt pattern then mikuni thats why adaptor was needed . I have a pro k flame arrester but will not clear hood to tall thought about trimming ducting but I still don't think that will give it enough.

I did the 44sbn conversion on my wife's 1992 550sx. Best upgrade I could have done, starts instantly, runs better. As for the flame arrestor, I cut down a stock Yamaha F/A. Then cut a piece of Lexan to fit the top, JB welded it on. Next I used a hole saw to punch some holes in it, then glued some screens on the back side. Works great, just clears the inner hood. Let me know if you need the jetting specs.550sx carb 003.JPG 550sx carb 004.JPG 550sx carb 003.JPG 550sx carb 004.JPG

Mark- Can you send me the specs for your setup. Having a miserable time getting the jetting. My husband did the same conversion for my 92’ any help you could provide would be great!

Why are you running a 44 and not twins. you need to feed the horses and these skis will wake up hard with twins
Also make sure you remove the stock reed stuffers and enjoy the free power

Will do. I have them written down at home. I'm at the Presque Isle freeride this weekend

I just installed the Watercraft Werks 550sx manifold to single SBN44. My hope is that I can use the stock Yamaha flame arrester because there is no spacer used.

The SBN44 arrives Tuesday. I will report back how it works.

I seriously considered Wax’s dual 38 manifold for the 550sx but I went single SBN 44 because I don’t know how to tune dual 38’s in that my wife’s 94 SN SJ and my 95 FX-1 both use single SBN 44’s.

Now you tell me.

Maybe a future improvement . . .

While we are at it, I looked at the reeds when I put the manifold on, and they looked good.

What is a reed stuffer?

And how do I remove them on a stock '93 550sx?

I don't see a reed stuffer on the partzilla.com diagram:

The stuffer just helps direct the air and fuel into the crank case and fills in the dead area in the Reed. They should be there on the stock reeds. They were in my 550sx engine when I had one.

The issue is that the reed stuffers help reversion on a two stroke and kill throttle response

I can attest to Wax's assessment they run much better with twin carbs and without the reed stuffers , I ran dual 38 BN carbs with a Hot Products manifold from day one on mine since it was built from New parts , it always ran really well .

somewhere down the line I ran across a Westcoast dual manifold that had the dual pattern for Mikunis and Kehins on it, I also ran across a dual Kehin setup for a Yami 650 , I used the dual Kehins on the Westcoast manifold and removed the reed stuffers , the increase in throttle response and power was amazing. I can only guess that with dual SBN 68'S or 44'S with the right setup it would have been even better.

These 550 reeds really haul if they are set up right , I really wish I had kept my setup in my 300SX and and run it with the 650 pump , I was also running the Westcoast dual total loss setup on that engine. and a Coffman half pipe .

I also did a 44SBN conversion on a customers ski , it did run really well but not as well as the twin carb setup did.

I ran dual sbn 38s on my reed engine with rad valves that had stuffers as well. That ski ran excellent. Never noticed any lack of throttle response with the stuffers in place. However I never tried running the engine without the stuffers to compare.

I can't think that the Westcoast intake and dual Kehins could have performed much better than the Hot products intake and dual 38 Mikunis , that just leaves the stuffers but there was a noticeable difference.

Yeah that’s the thing. Until you pull them ou you can’t tell. The aid in reversion in reversion and kill Mid-Range
