Super Jet 5 years sitting :: what to do before first start up?

Hello x-h2o

Great site, looking to frequent it!

So, i've been away to college and my ski has been setting covered up for ~5 years !!!

I'm wanting to get it up and lubed and fully tip top.

What should I do before I crank it over?

I'll get a new battery and plugs. I know the gas is near empty.

What are some recommendations so I don't mess anything up before starting it.

Thanks!

if you dont replace the lines, and it starts up,make sure there are NO fuel leaks cause the fuel lines will be crusty.also make sure there are no exhaust leaks.

Clean the carbs.

Definately. Check for crud in the internal fuel filters and stuck n&s.

i'd say maybe drop some oil in the cylinders. just a tiny bit tho

Definately. Leave plugs out and rotate it over by hand to spread the oil around.

Change the fuel filter, dump any old gas from the lines and tank. Add new premix gas with an additive like 'sea foam'

What jetmaniac said.

I'd use Sea Foam into the spark plug holes too...it mists and spreads really quickly. Spray into both holes, spin the engine by hand to get a cylinder down to bottom, spray that hole again, repeat for the other cylinder, then a few more spins by hand after that.

Definitely get the old gas out of there too.

Also, based on past experience, make sure that mice haven't stored up a few winter's worth of dry dog food in your water box...make sure nothing is in the line of fire of your exhaust when you fire it up the first time. :)

If it still has a fuel switch (Res/On/Off) take it out and blow out the inside and then lube the inside with fresh gas/oil mix. Those things are bad for clogging.

Edit: might want to lube the midshaft, especially if it is an older ski like a Kawi JS

Hey great responses! Thanks!

All this info is great to know and practice.

It was in a partial garage. (no garage door, but roof) and the ski had a cover. Thanks for the mice tips!

It's been to long can't wait to get it primed and ready XD

had this happen with an old 440 i had laying around. started it up and acorns started flying out the side exhaust. lol

So 5 years later before first start up...

Update from my last post....

I added WCF footholds, new hydroturf, shortened stock pole by 3", quick steer mod, d-cut ride plate, removed the choke + added primer kit, added a 500 bilge mounted with marine 5200, x-metal (now discontinued) straight bars and mount, odi grips, new oem fuel filter, new fuel lines, plugs, battery, umi finger throttle, and about to order a 201 worx intake grate.

I have some seafoam fuel additive- going to run a tank with that.... got the sea foam mist too, going to mist the plug holes and hand crank first. I got the carbs off and cleaned, almost ready to put it in the water.

And thanks for the help in this thread!
