I've wanted a nice ski but $$ has been an issue. I have a 650sx that I ride. I didn't want to drop $$ into a sx because everyone says the SJ is so much better, but at the same time, I didn't want to go through the problems of selling my ski and finding a SJ.

Well, as luck would have it, I just happened upon some good fortune and picked up a bunch of parts for pretty much nothing ($100 for all 5 of the extra skis including the X2 with an engine). As a result, I am going to build up my SX, and with the parts left over, I'm going to shoot for building an X2.

Pics 1-2 ~ more of the X2
Pic 3 ~ The X2 b4 I started cleaning it out. Narsty. Yes, the block is full of water. It's rain water so I'm optimistic that there is no severe damage.

So I've started by cleaning out the X2 and the SX.

The X2 has some good parts like cables, stock bilge, motor mounts, pro ride plate.

The X2 has an after market head, a PJS pipe, an upgraded carb of some sort, It has no water box??? It just has an alum. U bracket that routes the exhaust out the back of the ski. how does that effect it? It had dual cooling so I don't know how that effects things. I know I have at least one MSD ignition in one of these skis.

Comments? I'm hoping to get the engine pulled soon (busy with class and I need to get the relay on my 650SX fixed so I can ride this weekend).

At the very least, I am happy with my $100 purchase for just the motor mounts, cables, brackets, ride plates, intake grates, and a stock exhaust header. If nothing on this nasty engine works, I'm still money ahead. (Crossing fingers I can use that pipe!!)

But on the topic of what to do with the skis, I'd probably part everything out and get as much money as I could and buy a superjet. I have a 650sx and just recently bought a squarenose project. In my opinion the superjet is just an all around better jet ski.

build what you need ebay the rest, you'll be way ahead. I bet you end up with 2 nice skis and no more money out of your pocket because the ebay parts money will buy the remaining things you need.

I live in St. Pete. I had to drive an hour, past tampa, into the sticks to pick these up. The spider was just hitching a ride. You notice it's carrying an egg sack bigger than it?

Ya, that's what I want to do. Other than some paint and some turf, I pretty much have everything I need. Even if the X2 engine needs a build, I still only paid $100 for it.

Any comments on this X2 being built w/o a water box? How does that effect the preformance? Maybe it wasn't too loud because they routed the exhaust out the back of the ski. The pipe will probably go onto my ski, and I'd be willing to spend $40 on an aftermarket water box if I need to.

My 650 SX was not running due to a bad starter relay. I pulled the entire box off the parts 650 SX and put the alternator and the starter relay in my jet ski as an entire unit. My ski will start now and I'll be out this weekend.

I started stripping the parts 650SX. It appears to be in better condition than mine, so I am going to work on the second hull as I ride mine. Once the hull has foot holds, paint, and other various goodnesses, I'll transfer over my engine.

Here's what I started with.

This is as far as I got tonight. I did my best to keep all of the parts together because there is a whole lot of good parts there. I couldn't remove the pole because the screws are too tight. The thread started to strip and I quit. There's also a nice picture of all the parts I pulled, and a picture of my soap cocktail. There was some think white slimey film covering the bottom of the ski, so I grabbed some various soaps and poured them in. It's 12am so I can't run the vac. It'll get sucked up in the morning before work.

Yeah there are some goodies on those X2's. Looks like tow UMI steering steups from what I glanced. That old 400 is a collectors item too. I would clean and soprt out everything best you can then start eBaying. They have free listing fees for auctions starting under 10 bucks for like a month! I better get busy selling myself!!

I'm tossing arround some ideas in my head atm for what I want to do with this ski. I write this out because this is my 1st build, and if someone reading sees something I am doing contradicting the goal I am trying to accomplish, they can point it out.

Objective - #1 imporactance is that I have a nice reliable ski. #2 is what I can do with it. I do not plan to do free style on my ski as much as a lot of carving, jumping and subs, so a mad amount of low end power might not be my preferance. I think I'd rather have a smooth range of power. I also don't think the design of the 650 can handle speeds into the 50's. Stability becomes an issue when the water is not smooth.

Engine/drive - Whatever I can put together based on the parts I have. I want a good low end punch but I'd like to be able to get this ski into the low 40's (which is where my current ski runs). I ride with sit downs and we all know what they like to do. I thought about changing to a rear exhaust but I don't see the benefit.

I'm going to go with the ride plate that will be best for carving, slashing, hockey slides and subing, no D-cut here. I might go with the scoop style intake grate because it'd be better on the rough water from what I hear, but I have 4 different intakes and ride plates so whatever works the best for that.

I'm going to go with the prop and nozzle that does the best job getting me to 40 or 45mph top end, and delievers the rest to the low end. I'd like to be able to cruise arround 25mph w/o having to keep on the throttle wasting gas when going from one place to another. I think one of the X2's has a trim set up. I haven't gotten there yet to check it out, but soon I will, and if I do have a trim avail, I'll be using it on the SX.

I was talking about the no water box thing. I am still going to look into that some. Not having the waterbox in the front of the hull would give me a lot of extra space. I was thinking I could have a custom gas tank made that could get me up into the 8-9 gallon range so I can ride out to the islands. The issue would be that most of the time I would run it on 1/2 or 1/3 of a tank because that's just too much fuel for most riding, and I need to make sure the sloshing doesn't run it out of gas.

Hull - I was thinking about making footholds 2 or 3 inches from the back of the ski that have toeholds going up to just past half of the tray. I was debating foot straps because they kind of make me nervous but they look helpful.

I want to modify a hood so the water comes in from the back so I can sub w/o taking on so much water. I tossed the idea of hand holds but I don't really have a reason for them... I don't think I like a scupper so I'll probably go 1 or dual bilges with a stock bilge too.

Mostly just cleaning it up and making it super comfy to ride. Also thinking about internal fuel fill, because i think the hull would look nicer, and that'd be one less part that could break. Same idea with removing the chin pad and turfing the pole. One less thing that can fall off.

Paint/turf - This is the most undecided place I am. I was origionally thinking black hull, burgandy turf and a burgandy pole w/ black turf. They don't make burgandy turf......!!!! =( I was also going to turf the rails but it seems like a high maintance thing so I'll probably just do the lame black bumpers. Right now I'm leaning towards this picture that Marz831 posted of a 650SX. I like it, but I'll probably do a cobalt instead of burgandy.

I had to study for class so I didn't get much done tonight.

Once I started, as usual, I worked on the running ski 1st. I pulled the Pro ride plate off the project ski and put it onto my ski. It looks like it wiull hook up better. i'll get to try it out tomorrow. In the pic, the pro ride plate is the one on the ski and my old ride plate is the one I am holding.

On the project, I just got as far as removing the rest of the bumpers (and the ride plate of course. I tried to get the nose off again but I can't and now I'm angry it's holding up progress.

DAAAADDDDD!!!! Come help!!!! I'm stuck. ='(

Going to be looking into foot holds soon. I'm debating if I should make my own with my l33t non-existant glass skills of buy a set from Louie. I have a block of foam I'm going to expirament with, but if I were a betting man, I'd say Louie might have some $$ comming his way.

If your willing to make the molds I'd say go for it. It's not hard to glass them and if you screw up, just cut it out and reglass. By the time they're installed you'll have put a few layers over them anyway(hopefully) and will turf over them, covering up any blemishes. I am curious as to what you've already got done to your 650sx that you ride. Keep up the good work.

I ended up making my own and they turned out great.

Those holds look great.

I was thinking of cutting out the side of the tray, cutting in for my toes, and building up the side with foam for the top of my foot. Once it was shapped, I'd just glass over the foam. I'm not sure how I am going to do it.

I am curious as to what you've already got done to your 650sx that you ride.

Nothing but riding it and maintaining it. For engine mods, It came with a 44mm carb and a staingless prop, for handling it has quick steer and la di da in ride plates and intakes. I now have 4 ride plates and intakes so I'm just poping them on and seeing what I like. I wanted to install foot holds but I can't have the project done in 2 days. It could take 2 weeks and that means no ski for 2 weeks... The only current change since the purchase was the change the ride plate. I don't think I like it. It still lets go but now it hooks back up and jerks more.

I want to do some hood mods too (mostly so it doesn't take on so much damn water when I sub). The foot holds will be easier so I'm going to see how that works out for me 1st. Louies holds are $90 shipped, and once in a while he has a few for $75. I may go that route (because it wouldn't cost too much more) but I may not (because I like building things.) Everything will come down to how much it is going to cost for foam and glass.

Today, I pulled the engine that was in the X2 and started to tear it down. It's in BAD shape. It's possibly scrap, but the most important parts look pretty good. The pipe is good, it looks like it has a good 44mm carb, it has an aluminum bed plate, The head looks rough but managable, I haven't got off the upper or lower exhaust manafolds, but the intake manafold looks good.

The pics say a lot...

I still need to get a look at the rest of the engine to figure out what I want to do. With the way things are looking, it's probably going to need a new crank, pistons and a bore if not sleeves. If all that needs to be done, I'll probably just part out what I can.

I think I'm going to hold off on anymore work to the 650sx project hull, because if I only have one engine, I might sell everything extra, build an X2, scrap the 650 and find a sn/rn project. I need to find someone who will let me ride an SJ before I make a decision like that.
