701 Footrocket build

Quick background, I started riding a few years ago on a 650 SN, learned to ride on the lake and in the surf a bit. My buddy bought a double trailer recently with a blaster and raider on it. The blaster had a blown top end and he gave me the engine and electronics out of it. He also gave me the pump from the 96 raider as well as a bunch of bolts and hardware (super nice friend.) I sold my SN and picked up a 2014 FR from a member on the X, with x metal pole and a steering set up. I wanted to build a fun ski for surf and the large lakes by my house without spending a ton of money. The hull shipped safe and looked amazing.

Most of this is new to me but you have to learn somehow.

I started with the engine, it had a 62t lower end and a 61x top, with a riva head, b pipe, what i think are dual mikuni 44s (not sure how to tell,) unknown reeds, everything else stock from what i can tell.

I put a new 61x top end on (first time, not too bad) with a new ada head, 35cc domes, new b pipe.

After this I drilled and tapped the stock 144 pump for dual cooling and installed with the skat track 9/17 I had and a stubby pump cone. Took quite a few shims but got it right and flipped it over and start mocking up the engine bay. I bought a new Kavinci waterbaox and hose.

I picked up a used cf tank and everything fit well.

I didn't take many photos after this but everything went fairly smooth from there considering I was using cables from the raider, and a mix of new and used parts from various skis.

Once I got the ski together I tried to start it, and it started up for a sec and died. I tried again and it ran for a few sec like a ski starting for the first time after sitting a while then died. Third try it fired up and did this

Scared the crap out of me. So far i have pulled the flywheel and the key was fine. I have never looked at a stator before but it seemed ok, can't fine the mark in the cases that it is supposed to match up to though.

No I didn't, i was scared it would damage my brand new exhaust or blow the older crank seals. My buddy told me I should have tried a few more times before pulling everything apart. Kinda wish I did.

ok the reeds are fine they dont seam cracked or fraiyed
your timing is off need to find mark on the case to line up with the stator!
i dont think its a fuel problem most of the time it will back fire just once not like that!
