I was catching up on the forum this morning and saw a 'for sale' ad that got me thinking.

So, I guess since this has plated bores, the size (displacement) that you buy is the size that you'll have for the conceivable future correct?
My point is that you won't have a engine that's advertised as a "1100cc" when actually its a "1060cc" that is on its first bore. (I just stabbed at the displacement differences, don't jump my shyt.)

That disparity always confused me.

far as i know its always been that way with every engine. advertise max bore displacement. car engines, boat, bikes, they all do this.

I've never bought complete billet or aftermarket motors for anything, just bore out what I got to the max, so the jet ski world always baffled me on how they got away with this lol. I know oem will usually round to the nearest 50. Well they used to anyway.

Advertising something with an 827 cc displacement as an 865 isn't exactly rounding to the next 50....
Not quite as bad:
Or an 865 as a 900
Or a 970 as a 1000
Or a 1050 as an 1100
Or 1178 as "True 1200 displacement" when even the max bore doesn't touch 1200

As in how to get away with it....people can't do math, that's how. Just marketing terms anyways

Besides, the OEM's did this nearly two decades ago.

I didn't mean to stir up all this conversation, but... I guess its not quite riding season. People are getting antsy.

Still no answer to my initial question.

I don't mean they're rounding up 50cc. Like a cbr600 is a 599. A 300ex atv is 289cc. Stuff like that. Sry If it didn't come out like that.

I dont see anything wrong with that. The only bad one is the dude selling his Rickter XFR at the 827bore and calling it an XS900

Its amazing how in our market so much is gotten away with, you can thank the OEM's for that one. So the stock stroke will be called the 963.99996 so that theres no misleading info. No testing this weekend, going to Indy for a trade show. I will have more next week though.

I have never had an A/M big bore motor in any of my skis, just stock motor. This definitely got me thinking...... :scratchchin:

The bore is set, the only way you could change it is the have the cylinder sleeved which wouldn't be good because of the inner port design. So, to answer your question, one bore. But, the good thing about that is, it is pretty cheap to have the cylinder re-nikasiled when comparing to boring or sleeving.

I've been working on the Rickter but have to stop and get ready for Indy. Here is a pic I took a little while ago. This is the "test bunny", yes it has a starter now. With Nikasil there is no need for any size other than what is to be run. You will run several sets of pistons before you even concider working on the cylinder. For now there are two sizes, 964cc's and 1105cc's.
