Other Always tighten everything...

I have been chasing an issue now for about a week. Looking for air leaks etc. It ran pretty good after the last carb cleaning. Lately it's been flat on the midrange and leaving the front plug looking lean. I checked for air leaks etc. I decided to open up the carb on the lean cylinder to see what I could find... the 2 screws that hold the plate over the Jets had come loose and were stopping the diaphragm from moving in enough to open the needle valve. I thought I should post this to help others that may spend lots of time chasing something stupid like I have. After I switched back to total loss I tore the carbs down to clean so I knew I had a fresh start. Moral of the story, slow down and check everything twice!

@philipclemmons thanks for pointing me at carbs to solve the issue in the first place.

Thanks for pointing that out... I hoped by posting this I may help someone, maybe today or years from now they may have a similar issue and think back to this thread.

I agree with this, except tighten to proper torques and amounts. Overtightening can cause same problems as under tightening.

Yeah those screws suck. It's funny I have the opposite problem. I've rounded more of those #2 Phillips in disassembly than any other screw/bolt on a SJ. I've been meaning to find a stainless replacement but seem to keep forgetting

I was just kidding about lock-tite on those particular screws. I don't know about you guys , but I have had issues with those screws , stripping real easy if you don't get a good bite on them. Or trying to get them with a screw driver that doesn't fit just right ! But to set the record straight I never use lock -tite here

One of these little guys has saved me so many stripped carb screws, and not even due to the impact functionality but rather the perfect fitment of the bits. Usually around $10 at Harbor Freight.

impact driver is a great tool , but if you dont have one, if you hit any screw or bolt hard with a hammer BEFORE you ever try to loosen it, it makes it come loose a lot easier. i usually bash a phillips head in most carb screws first, even though i have a few impact drivers floating around. a lot of times i just hit the head directly with the hammer first. the hammer trick kills 2 birds with one stone, gets out aggression and gets the screw to come out.

Also good for ebox screws and engine cover screws on vintage motorcycles.
