Super Jet Am I Boned? How did this happen.

Nope. Just kept tightening ring compressor until they went in when I turned the motor by hand it didn't feel like too much resistance. It was just one of those things that you don't know till you know. First experience with a 2 stroke ever and should have inquired on here on why the rings didn't seem to seat in the grooves right. Talked to Zack at PHP and he broke it all down for me on what happened. I will be writing to Pro-tec with a copy of the instructions so maybe this does not happen to someone in the future. Havn't had a plane go down yet so hopefully I'm doing things right on that front.
Where does Pro-Tec come into the story? What part do they play in this? Did you purchase top end kit from them and the instructions (that everyone else gets) that come with pistons were not provided?

Pro-tec makes the Pro-X pistons at least thats what I thought. I could be wrong I need to check into that. I used the instructions that came in the box with the pistons. Not trying to blame anybody but myself for not knowing. As an aircraft mechanic it does not matter what parts you get or where they came from it is the installing mechanics responsibility to make sure parts are correct and properly installed. That is what I live by so I am the only one to blame. If the wrong instructions were supplied I would just not want this to happen to someone else if it could be avoided. Not trying to bag on them at all or get anything for free from them. My replacement pistons that I am buying will also be Pro-X (just a little bigger).

I can see how someone could F this up. Its just a generic install instruction for all pistons.

Figure 3 is incorrect for our pistons. Pro-X is assuming you can see the semi circular notch on the ring ends and are smart enough (no disrespect) to align that with the pins in the ring groove.

So I am guessing you installed the rings correctly following the instructions that were provided, but did not think about it.

poopty lesson to learn, hopefully you just do it once. ;)

Thank you. As two stroke motors would not have an oil rail and only compression I put my rings in at 180deg lined up with wrist pin. Like I said, first time dealing with a two stroke and had no idea about the alignment pins. Lesson learned and price paid. Definitely wont happen again.

Everybody on here has been awesome. I actually learned more about my motor in the last 24hrs than I have since I got it. Still not sure how a two stroke actually works besides awesome. Still gotta love the whole twice the power half the weight idea of them though. I have read a ton about them and for some reason just don't grasp the concept. Thats why when getting ready to set mine up I had talked to mechanics and owners at Jetworks, GroupK, XScream, Blowsion, Thrust Innovations and PHP before I spent a penny on anything. They were all great and extremely helpful about which direction to take my motor.

I am curious, did your ring compressor force that alignment pin into the piston and deform it? I am impressed that you were able to fit the piston into the bore.

Actually it just slipped under it. In the middle of this conversation I got the motor out and torn down. And this is what I got. If it would not have let the ring in the groove at all I might have done more of a double take.

If you truly on a budget. You could always take some 800 grit sand paper to the scoring of that cylinder. Go side to side not up and down . And reassemble correctly I'd bet it would run just fine. The scoring is going to line up with the piston ring gap anyways probably only going to see a slight drop in compression.

Chris we will be able to get that cylinder turned around right away for you. I will measure how deep the rings cut into the bore and we will go from there as far as the size we need to go. If the grooving is deep there's no doubt it will have to be bored to get the rings to seal. We will make sure to run you on the least painful boning discount we can come up with bud! I feel bad for the painful lesson...bet you don't do that twice!

Just overnighted the cylinders to ya. Grooves are deep enough to hook with a fingernail. Lets just do what we gotta do. If I end up needing bigger domes no prob. Thanks for the help. Pistons are perfect. If anybody is looking for a set of 83mm with no rings give me a shout

PHP you guys rock

So I did call ProX this morn in the Netherlands about instructions that are included with their pistons. Got a bunch of sorry's which means they have probably already forgotten about my call. They are sister companies with Weisco. Might try them next

I woudnt even try to reuse them. That pin now looks like it would let the ring spin around the piston. It might not, but who wants to take a chance.

that is true and I wasn't recommending he did reuse them, just adding on 102nd7 post about budget rebuild. But either way he is probably gonna have to bore and get new pistons anyway.
