harbor freight has this one rated for 500 lbs for 40 bucks and i have a 15% off coupon.

sides don't look too sturdy but hard to tell from a pic.

I have a similar one rated for 500 lbs as well. And I had to do alot of welding to brace it up so it would actually be able to carry my 240 lbs superjet. I also had to create a second receiver so the rack didn't wabble.

I put a couple 2x4s with some carpet on mine and put the SJ on there. Mine fit pretty tight in the receiver, so it doesn't wobble much. I had it before I got the SJ, and just used it a couple time before I got a trailer.

If you build one go all out and make it just for a ski. No tiedowns just a bow pin and your off. My ski has been thousands of miles hanging on that rack. Never a problem.

I have one that I had custom made. It is rated to 1000 lbs. I drove 2000 miles in a week with it on the back doing up over 100mph and never worried about it. I'd spend the extra money for a better one if it were me.

This is the guy who made mine. I have bunks on mine and can take them off if I want to. It has 6 spots to strap it down too. I think I paid $175 or so but well worth it.

I have built 2 of them and I used 2X2X1/4 on both and both have taken a beating. This one is built with 13 gage 3 Inch aluminized exhaust pipe. With 1/8 inch gussetts at the bottom of the pipe. I pulled my speed boat with my old one and my ski on the rack. My boat and trailer was about 2500 pounds.

This one has pulled a double trailer with 2 couches on it to Myrtle beach through the mountians. Behind the Lightning and it has no suspension travel so many times it bottomed out. Which felt like the ski was going to fly off the rack but no problems. Also watch out if you are going to do stupid stuff make sure the hitch is rated for that weight. I removed the stock hitch off of the L rated at 10K pounds and I installed a 12500 rated hitch. I also drove like I was on the track all the time... LOL

BTW I have over $250 in steel in my hauler and that was 3 years ago...

royal flush has one

Mine's not a Harbour Freight $40 less 15% kind of hauler, though.

And it doesn't have an added receiver to tow a trailer.

I built a steel one in 1995 and used it to haul a 550 to and from Texas/Florida. I had this one built out of aluminum because of the whole salt issue.

But anyway---here's a picture:

I plan on using it tomorrow!

Hey flush build some uprights on the rear of the rack then you don't have to tie the ski down.. But make sure that the one closest to the truck is right at the bumper heigth or you can't put the tailgate down... you have to take the rack out... :banghead:

I won some stainless tie-down straps in the 2006 Daytona Raffle---it's worth the "insurance" to strap it down, IMO. I always think the ski makes an awful expensive bumper, and I am frequently checking the rearview mirror for potential disasters. :sneaky:

No chit. Easy to do and helps hold the ski. I simply back up to the shore at the launch-site, remove the tie-downs, pull the ski backwards until I can sit the a-s-s end on the sand, lift the nose off, and I'm ready to ride. :arms:

What are you guys paying to get these custom built?

Are you just kinda having the welder wing it or are you building these off of some basic plans? I mean other than center the ski, two rails and a front stop.

And then mine has the uprights in the rear so you don't have to tie it down. I got some general plans sketched out but nothing formal. It took forever to get this one set up right and everything lined up before the welding started but since I have a prototype it wouldn't take so long. It will still take a lot of time.

I really don't have the time to weld another one. But if you have the time a used welder and an tank of gas will be cheaper than paying a welder to do it. That is what I did. I read a few nights on welding so I know what to look for and to make sure that I knew what I was doing. Then bought a welder praticed on some exhaust tube then went to work. Everything was v groved and bouble passed with the welder and then ground smooth.

Welding it easy really easy if you can pull a finger throtle you can weld. Making a weld pretty is the hard part that it why all my welds on the rack are double passed and then ground smooth so you can' see how crappy they look. After a project like this I turned out to be a pretty decent welder now. I am even welding aluminum now. I am doing all kinds of projects for other people now also. LOL

I assume you're talking about MIG then? TIG is a whole new world. TIG is def. a lot harder. It's not as easy as some make it look:smile:
