Surfriding Anyone convert a standup hull to a trailer to haul extra fuel?

How about an old white water kayak. Gut the inside and modify the skirt so it becomes a cover. You can get a Perception Dancer cheap
Streamline and watertight.

replace the drive shaft with a scupper system and use the tray for fuel. then you would also be able to pac a cooler lunch as well and tools. most of the weight needs to be in the rear as we all know to tow a stand up.

We fill our SJ tanks to the brim, and bring a 2 gallon tank in the tray. Its about a 5-6 mile ride from the ramp to the inlet.

We stop on a beach there, put about a gallon in the dual carb skis and go ride the surf. The guy that burns the most fuel tells us when its time to go back in, then we shoot the 1/2 mile back to the beach spot, add the other gallon of fuel and it gets you back to the ramp.

This will let us ride about 2 hours. I dunno what kind of shape you are in but in decent surf that is a lot of abuse on the body.

If a gas can holds fuel and you turn it upside down, shake it around and it doesn't leak.......then water doesn't get in either. So you don't have to worry about a cover. But a 2 gallon fits in the tray nicely.

Edit: 2 guys in the group are running bigger dual carbs and 771's and 830's so they drink the fuel. The single carb 61x guys can go all day with no extra tank. Everything is B piped with ADA heads at the bare minimum.

i hacked off the top deck of a coucher as an idea for a tow along more marketed towards river rats who like to camp and travel with their big a$$ skis...its no done but its just the bottom and foam filled a few inches and needs deck over and side railing

We are running SS865's with very thirsty dual 46's. We burned 13 gallons each our last ride out and came in with under 2 inches in the bottom of our tanks.

Granted we burned quite a bit of fuel making the run in/out twice. The first time was a scouting trip and the second time we hauled the fuel out with us. We only had 5 gallon jugs with us so we topped off our tanks and rode with the big jugs about half full all the way out. Perhaps a smaller jug would allow for you to still get your feet up front in the ski or at least allow surf stance.

Damn I am having one built... I was hoping the fuel consumption would be only a touch worse than my ported 701 with dual 44's jetted with giant low speed jets, big needles, and low popoff.

I am usually one of the first or second to run out now.

I've hauled jugs in a backpack before for just that purpose, you can navigate boat traffic and waves on your way to the spot. Not a bad ride, even with a heavy back pack!

at least w/ the kayak idea some of those eviro nuts would wave instead of giving the bird..

i have been thinking of a suction mount for the long board to tow it out to the jetties behind the x2. catch a few and shred a few

I like the Kayak Idea too, especially the stubby whitewater ones. I just wonder if it would get too top heavy as well? If it ever did go over how hard would it be to right it again?

Plus we likely wouldn't get in as much trouble pulling a kayak up on the shores of SC as we would leaving a bunch of fuel jugs.

A kayak would tow well, but they aren't very deep. Loading a bunch or 2gal cans in it might work out pretty well. Towing a tube might be tough. I was suprised how much drag ours produced with 60Lbs in it.

couches

No that it helps but i have seen some old school motorless couches with 3 big stock gas tanks in them. Sucks but a siphon will get the job done and they arnt that heavy to tow gutted with only fuel. I have even seen them with rule 500 hooked to a battery just in case things go bad.

a cheap pontoon is the way to go,pull the skis on deck and take your time gettin there, you have, tools, gas, food and drinks on board and dont have to deal with towing anything,or the drama of riding a sj miles and miles to your ride spot, the min you push em off the boat you are full of energy and pumped,if someone breaks down you dont have to tow them miles back in.

We have one here but the motor blew up and junkies are cheap as shiz here, might get it going one day.The only disadvantage to them is keeping a running motor on one more thing and choppy surf they cant handle

Gut out a Kawasaki SC and you should have a nice, stable trailer with room for all the fuel plus tools and a snack. Flat bottomed and fairly wide would make for a stable trailer unlike a narrow kayak.
I bet you could even add a set of bunks to the top of that thing so you wouldn't need a double trailer. Bunks could be used to carry back stranded skis.

good luck towing that kayak!

tried to do it this past weekend and it doesnt work for :):):):)!!!!!!!!!!!

use a tube on a medium rope so its out of the jetwash......if a couch can tow a fat guy all over place on one, why not 10 gallons of fuel and a cooler

http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/for/1948111194.html a better choice..cooler on one side, gas on the other..........

you dont want to use a hull...too damn heavy to be lifting in and our of your trailer
