Other Anyone else considering changing jobs in this current economic climate?

OK, here's my story so I'll try not to drag it out too long. I have always had jobs loosely classified as an install or repair technician. I started off in the car audio industry in 1994 and spent nearly 17 years combined as an installer/supervisor. I liked the job and met some cool people along the way, but the wages made it very hard to support my family. After moving on, I ended up staying on as part-time up until this past summer. My previous full-time gig was repairing commercial type office equipment. Printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, etc.... I became pretty content (or lazy) after 7 1/2 years. The pay was decent, a company car is ok, and plenty of vacation time had me in cruise control. I had wandered into that job because I ended up absolutely hating my previous job as a commissioned based residential electrician. With the economy being pretty tough in 2010, I pretty much jumped on to the first thing I found. Year after year I kept imagining myself possibly retiring as "the copier guy". I wasn't very stoked on this and tried to keep my head up while collecting the paychecks. Socially, I kind of distanced myself from most of my friends as I wasn't very proud of the career moves I had made in the past. I felt kind of ashamed that I had given up trying to better myself and that I had "settled". To help pull through those last 5 or 6 years, I resorted to focusing more on my hobbies than my career. This involved lots of flatland bmx and riding jet skis with my buddies. As some of you may know, during the winters, I researched and practiced composites until I was able to build my own hull. Besides my family, that finally gave me something to be proud of. I then look forward to chatting on here and meeting new X members at whatever free-rides I could make it to. At this point, life is good, but my job still sucks... After posting a few ski build pics on fb along with already having some car audio build pics on there, I was contacted by a customer I had done some work for over 15 years ago about a possible career move. What's the odds of that happening? He told me about a high profile, but low key company he works for 15 minutes from my house that builds autonomous vehicles. I had no idea something like this is going on in central Illinois. He thought that with my skills and background, I would be a perfect candidate. Long story short, I went to check the place out and was blown away! I packed some carbon fiber samples and pictures with my resume. They were blown away as well!!! I've been working there for the past 3 months installing the self driving systems as well as doing some composite work integrating some of the sensors and components. The pay is great, I'm working in a cutting edge industry, and I get to travel once in a while to our shops in Germany, Silicon Valley, Detroit, and China. Already been to Germany and am going to SV in 2 weeks. :)
Anyway, thanks everyone for helping me out whether you knew it or not. Remember to keep grinding and try not to burn any bridges. Hopefully luck will come your way. p.s. I'm back in the garage working on a new hull for next year.

As I was reading through this, I was like man this guy sounds familiar...haha you're the dude I met at Lake Clinton! Sounds like you found a sweet gig. See ya in the Dells this year?

I am loving my new career change. A lot different then engineering and manufacturing. But I can honestly say I don't miss the auto industry one bit! Pay isn't as great but it's made up with many other things. Glad I took the leap and the several months of training out of town.

Got a call back for an interview! Pretty stoked about it, not looking forward to the massive pay cut, but excited for the opportunity to shift gears and get acclimated to my future environment.

So the hospital I have the interview with is where I am doing clinicals this semester. Today was my first day there and my instructor told me that I apparently made a good impression on the nurse I was paired with. So I now have someone on the inside who will put in a good word for me with the hiring manager. Things are looking good for this interview.

So in a shocking turn of events today I just lost my current job of 6.5 years. Knew something would happen sooner or later, but did not expect it today. Boss man was not happy about making this decision usually he is ready to get whoever it is out the door. Gave me a severance check too which was above and beyond anything he owed to me and he took care of my parts bill too. I am so grateful for the time I have had there and have been praying for a new opportunity to arrive. This is just the closing of this chapter of my life I guess. Such a strange feeling though. New and better things will be just around the corner.

Damn, sorry to hear this but at least you have a toe in the water looking for new work already.

Was this a downsizing thing that you knew was coming or did they catch wind that you were looking for something else?

I think more than anything its just a scheduling issue. I am only the a couple of days a week now, small shop of 9 employees, its making things hard on them to fulfill obligations to the customers when I cant be there all the time. Its not a bad bridge burning type of leaving either, so if I ever need anything I dont think they would hesitate to let me use the shop. This will give me some time to study, look for new and different work and time to do some woodworking projects to make a few bucks on the side. The guy next to me said me leaving is like losing half his brain since I am packed full of worthless knowledge. I told him to think of it like a stroke. Nobody wanted it to happen, and though he lost half a brain at least he still has the memory.

Absolutely amazing OCD, it seems like we are running in sync somehow lol. I just accepted a new job a couple of weeks ago and will be starting it next Tuesday. Like you,I have been watching this company I am currently with, rapidly begin to tank. I don't want to be here when it does. 10 years in and I'm done with it. New path entirely.

So my interview was supposed to be today, but I met the hiring nurse manager yesterday while in clinical and things started off kinda strange. She introduced herslef to me and I mentioned that I had an interview with her tomorrow. She looks me dead in the eye and says i already know who you are. Ok kinda strange. We are eating lunch and she comes to the hospital cafe and gives me the I need to speak to you now line. So I go to see her and she tells me that she has had no less than 4 calls from whom she wont say, but that she is supposed to hire me. Plus all her staff are riding her because they want me to come work there, so I guess she was tired of hearing about me. She seemed awfully eager to hire me, so I stuck to my guns and managed to a job where I only really have to work 3 shifts every 2 weeks to maintain my prn position, got better pay than folks at comparable hospitals in the same position, and dont have to work nights or weekends! And best of all my wife was cool with it and backed off of me and the me not work just go to school rant. I am excited about the opportunities that go with this, its a great foot in the door and should be a great launchpad for my new career.

Work hard and just do your job and you will never need to worry about your job!

Some of the best advice I have ever been given and just as true today as ever.

And for the record, I am still loving my new job. :)

Except when corporate execs find cheap labor in other countries... They don't give a fock about you and your hard work if your plant is 90million profitable if they can move it to China and have a little more. Or maybe I'm just bitter?

How hard was it to make the move to the states? Seems my wife and I keep tossing the idea around and I’d love to get away from the cold.

The company itself may not care but the people that work there sure do and they will always take good people with them. I have been through 5 different plant closures over 27 years and never missed a single day of work. I have built a network of people that watch for me to become available.

I impressed one individual years ago when he first started climbing the corporate ladder. He is now one of the VP’s of my current company and the reason I am here.

He’s the man who told me the quote I mentioned above and also the same individual who brought me down to the US.

We started off working on shift together back in 2001. I was the shift electrician and he was the production manager. Three companies, 2 countries and 17 years later, we are still working together. When Chad calls me, I just ask when and where.

About four months ago I finally pulled the bandage off to move from my work-from-home situation that I had been doing for a couple of years to going back into the office working for a different company. I moved to work with a guy I worked with years ago and really enjoyed having him as a manager.
Fast forward to three weeks ago and I find out he is leaving the company. Fast forward to one week ago and I find out they are closing this office because it is not feasible to replace the manager in a timely manner.
I was really enjoying things and am now given three choices, go back to working from home with my previous company, working from home as a remote employee for my current company or going to work in one of their other offices (Cali, Texas or Arkansas) which is tempting after our long winter.

I just made a new move again too. I spent the last...about 6 weeks in a position with a different company that turned out to be horrible. After going through the fishing lure trick to get me there with promises of great things they totally backed out of living up to it. Fortunately my new job now, I can see as a permanent position. I went from a 10 year long job, to a 6 week long horrible mistake, to a new, certainly desired retirement career. Sometimes the promises given in an interview are just fishing lures, that 6 week stint was clear evidence of that for me.
