I know we’ve talked about gps beacons for sunk skis in the past. Was just curious if anybody has thought of apple air tags. I know they make waterproof cases but very little information on if they transmit thru water and depth etc

Air tags won't work underwater for the reason KMN says. if you were very worried about sinking your ski you could put, in your tray, a container with like 100FT of thin but strong rope(cord) and a small noticeable buoy. When you do sink it, you release the buoy and rope and boom, ski can be dragged back in our tracked.

That’s what I use now. Paracord and a key float IMG_1460.jpg

But would they work? And track through a carbon hull? Was thinking inside a chinpad (if I had one lol).
I bought an air tag to try this. I plan on putting it in my e-box. I won't be able to test it until late spring, because I'm buried in snow and still have to build the ski when it gets warmer out. I know they warn people that there's a tag following them, but I'm not sure how long before that kicks in. I'm going to try having it follow my wife to find out. I could do this now, but I don't want to pull the plastic tab to activate the battery yet.

Airtag is not good as a theft tracker because not only will it notify the person that it is moving with but it will start beeping.

"Yes, people can use AirTags to track your location without your knowledge, but Apple products will notify their users that an AirTag is following them after a few hours and the AirTag itself will begin making its presence known with noise within 24 hours"

200$ a year to have the ski insured for 10k.

I’ll have to look into it again. Last time I insured skis I was still on EME and it was a nightmare back then trying to find a company that would do aftermarket skis, specially with state issued hins.

Here’s a little more on it

I haven't found anyone around here that will insure a standup. And at this point, $10k will only get me a stock one with a B pipe.

If anyone takes the ski, they'll likely have it hidden in a garage within a few hours. After that the tag won't be following them, and hopefully won't alert them. Even if it does, I should still have the location of the house where it was taken.

Why not just insure the ski? It would be cheaper and easier? I'd rather not even have to worry. My concern is only my safety. Not the ski.

I know for an absolute fact that they pay out for a sunken ski. Without a shadow of a doubt.

Maybe you can't insure out of cali. Not sure why. We have the most possible liability.

Mine is through state farm. 2 Rickters. I've also had one in the past with geico. And recently Checked in with geico as I had some stuff drop off and they were still totally willing to insure a stock, or even aftermarket jet ski. Just wanted a Vin is all. I believe I was quoted 230 for 15k coverage for the year.

Because it seems like skis can't be insured outside of CA. I've been told by many insurers that they can do it, but a day later the call back and say they can't.
Have you called the guys number I posted? He has helped get multiple out state a/m hulls insured. Tell him Cody sent you.

This past summer I tired to insure my skis with Geico as I have every year, 2000 Superjet, 2001 and 2003 Seadoo's and they said the skis are too old and they would not insure them anymore.
