Surfriding Are scuppers still considered sinkers of surf boats ?

I have seen alot of am hulls w/scuppers used in surf and guys seem to have no problem with scuppers in the surf, you have to have a good hood seal for one thing...So has the opinion of this subject changed in recent years ?

If you have a good hood seal, why do you need a scupper? :clown:
I've had bad experiences with them in the past, so I specifically had my Freak built without it.
I'm very happy with dual bilge pumps and a stock siphon

I hate the idea of not being able to wash sand and other crud out of the ski, so I like to have some sort of scupper. The best setup I have found is a dual breather pole setup, with a single bilge and versi plug max. The versi plug doesn't flow water that fast, but it works well alongside the bilge.

i never had a problem running a 1way..if my ski is getting pounded hard enough to sink i dont think a scupper is going to make or break it..im sure the inland surf experts will disagree..

Put it like this, if your sinking, your sinking, with a scupper it just happens twice as fast.
It will not let air trap against the bulkhead which slows the sinking down some.
When your not sinking they are not a problem if you have a screen protecting them from getting hung open by zip ties, bolts, nuts or whatever else may be loose in your bilge area.

If someone gets seperated 50 yards from their upside down ski w/ scupper in 6-7 foot surf and their buddy has to flip the ski over, how much time do you have with a ski upside down with a scupper ?

That ski is going under if you are 50 yards away in head high surf. Hope you got foam in the tray. It will turn into a bob lol.

if your ski is sitting in the water chances are you might be taking on water. from what i remember jerry jones, christian young, kevin rickon, and i think mark gomez all had scuppers and the leaked. personally i rather run two bilge pumps then have a scupper since they only work when you are moving.

IMO if you get that far away from your ski in that kind of surf, even if your buddy gets it upright quickly, it probably took on enough water that it won't start. At the very least your buddy can tow your dead ski out of the break. Unless you are talking 15 sec delay 5-6 footers. Then you might have a chance. East coast 5-6 is usually on top of each other pummeling you though.

Also differs if you are riding a beach break or a sandbar. I ride a little more careless and kick it away if I am by the beach. At the sandbar I keep my ski close. Too easy to lose in the middle of he inlet.

Don't let go!!!!

I let go on small days.

I try my hardest not to kick it away on big days though.

Sometimes the ocean gets the best of you or a mechanical failure cuts your power and leaves you stranded. At that time hang on!!

BTW I run a blowsion one way in my fixed steer and a 2 inch versaplug in my RN.

Both boats have stock siphon bilges and one rule 500 each.

Add Charlie Hustle to that list. Last year I got seperated from my boat in Oside and I couldnt believe how fast my boat went down.

I don't like them in the surf like someone said above your ski will go down either way eventually just happen a little faster with a scupper . I do like them for hosing out my ski after its been in salt though makes life easy . I just block my scupper with a plummets bung thingy when I'm riding then pull it out when I'm flushing . I breath through the pole and have a decent hood seal and bilge kit seems to be fine that way . I have a lowered hood on my ski with the holes blocked , I stuffed a bouyancy bag in there and blew it up ski wants to right its self on its own now !
