Freestyle Atp Flame Ts2 discussion

I bought one to try out in my Rickter since it’s the only total loss option that’s will fit in a waterproof enclosure that’s not massive. I haven’t got to run it yet but I’m wanting to know who has ran it and who had good luck with it and what y’alls opinion is on it. I know there have been some bad experience in the past. I know a local rider that initially had low end breakup with a new system that cleared up after switching from a new Kawi coil to a used OEM Yami coil. The Yami coils have tinned wires, Kawi does not. Unknown why this occurred in freshwater only testing but it did. With the used Yami coil the TS2 ran fine with no start issues.

Humm. I think kawi coils were the thing to do for a surf ski

It works well, an o.g. rider I know has been using ts2 for several years now. Only gripe was it takes about 1-2 seconds for the ignition to wake up from sleep mode so it will take a bit longer to crank up after your ski sits for a few minutes.

In general the ts2 has had a pretty good track record for quality, unlike the epic hx3 which was hit or miss.

Setting the static timing is tedious, expect several rounds of installing and pulling the flywheel and adjusting stator plate.

The electronics prefer the Yami coil, that's what it was designed for, not sure how a coil could affect it but stick to what works. If it starts running rough, try replacing coil. The older ones had kick-back issues which was eventually solved with an updated flash. Watch for earth wire on stator plate coming loose, they use an electrical epoxy in the terminal which doesn't last, rather solder the terminal on

We had 3 or 4 guys in our riding group running it, and i think all had some kind of issues. not really able to clarify why and how. @stefan had this ignition, and we stood in Holland with our friend Tim Verheij who just build a DASA 1000cc to him, the thing wouldn't fire. only back fire. We ended up driving back home, without water testing the new engine. Stefan put in OEM electronics and the ski fired right away and ran great

This was with the new ts2?

To be fair, im not 100% sure. Maybe @stefan can chime in? But i do know that at least the last 2 guys in our group, that ran ATP - was a TS2. they had problems with. I helped them out and talked to Chris and ATP - a very nice guy though. But eventually one switched to OEM and another to MSD TL

why is it such a pain?

That's just what I have heard, read the instructions and you'll see what I mean. You have to find tdc on front cyl and then set to 40* static timing, led must light up with the pointer at that mark. And in order to achieve that you have to remove the flywheel and rotate the stator then reinstall flywheel and repeat the test.

That would be the same process for setting timing on msd. Only advantage to msd is you can have the flywheel lightened by @zero and adjust the pickup plate through the holes in it without out removing the flywheel

The flywheel doesn't have to be torqued down to set the timing fellas. Sheesh.

I've been running a first gen flame for years in the surf with no problems. I love it.

I'll will also say that I did back to back testing on a ts2 and a msd with the same timing curves on a tpe1105 and the msd was hands down stronger.

OEM Kawi coils DO have tinned wires. They are manufactured for Yamaha and Kawasaki by the same company to each companies specs.

Well so far I’m not having good luck. Setting timing was easy. I followed the instructions and set it by the marks on the flywheel and I also checked it by using a piston position calculator and a dial gauge in the spark plug hole.

It kicks back. Already destroyed a bendix and a starter.

I emailed Atp and didn’t get much of a solid answer

I’ve tried setting the start retard to 1°, 10°,15°, and 30° still kicks back

I plan on trying to ride tomorrow with the start retard at 0 and twin spark off and see what it does

We have seen lots of destroyed starters and bendix with ATP flames. Does yours have the 'latest' flash or whatever was supposed to have fixed that issue?

Yes. It’s brand new. I bought the complete kit already in their ebox so I would get the year warranty
